well as most of you that closely follow this forum know, I applied to Brown College and was placed (1st) on the waitlist. I was upset, but in the end I became okay with it because spots would open up and I had a shot at a spot. We'll I got really upset when I found out other people had ben pulled off the waitlist before me... so I went to talk to housing, and now it all makes sense.

I DID get into Brown College

yep, sure did, buuuuuuuuuuut but but, you can't be in Brown as a first year and be a scholar (Echols/Rodman) Scholars HAVE TO live in scholars dorms. Period. sooooo when I got picked to be there, they saw Rodman status, and moved me back a place, repeat until they are done, and I end up first on the waitlist. Then when they go to the waitlist, same thing happens. LAME. So theres the skinny for everyone who was wondering.

IF YOU ARE A SCHOLAR YOU CANNOT LIVE IN BROWN FIRST YEAR

but, its still worth applying. I was told, that because I was officially 'accepted' I would be given a spot next year no matter what, so I am guaranteed a spot in Brown 2nd (and on if I want it) year.

I just thought that was useful information from housing about the mysterious selection process has been a little bit demystified.

It's good to know that you did actually get into Brown. Otherwise it would leave you wondering---why not me???? But now you know, and you'll probably be there next year, right?? cool!!

I understand that you may be disappointed about not living in Brown since it was your first choice. However, as a Rodman scholar, you'll soon realize the tremendous advantage/convenience of living together will the other rodmans. The vast vast majority of assignments you get in STS 200 and ENGR 141/142 are group assignments, and Webb Lounge is basically the default place to meet and get it done. It would be a bummer if you had to walk back and forth from Brown to all these meetings, although the walk is only ~10 min. Besides these academic reasons, I want to emphasize that the Rodman class is a small group of ~35 students and you'll form a bond after having so many classes together. Believe me when I say that many of your Rodman classmates will become your best friends during first year and beyond.

yep. I have a feeling your right, thought I am only going to be taking one class with them (Im switching to CLAS unless something major comes along and changes my mind). Still, when I met some of my fellow Rodmen, and saw Web b and the location, I changed my mind. Would Brown be awesome? Certainly! but it will be great in Webb as well, and I am sure I will love the first year experience.

It all makes sense now. Thanks for the explanation ehiunno. I was kinda upset that they picked me over as you deserved to be there more than me. Now, I'm a bit relieved too.

youd better come visit us if youre planning on moving in 2nd yr... hehe. seriously, tho, you dont wanna be known as 'that kid who got into brown bc of some rodman thing' you should be 'that kid who got kept out of brown bc of that rodman thing man im excited for when he lives here next yr' you know? :)

Geez couldn't somebody simply have told you that E? You have been concerned for sometime and you could have been spared a bit of angst. Bad comm IMO.

lol, it seems that way. Thanks for the support though everyone!

And Hazelorb, dont worry, I'll be in Brown plenty. I have a lot of friends living there, and if nothing else two of them have Wii's and I dont, so you can be guaranteed I will be there, lol.

Now, you have more experience with Brown than I do, so tell me if this isn't possible, but my mom had the coolest idea when we were walking around Brown: My friends are going to be roommates, so what they are going to try to do is move the beds into the room without a fireplace, and keep cloths, living stuff, etc. in there. For the other room? game room/hang out room. get a futon, stand for the TV with wii/xbox 360s, I may just donate my old beat up foosball table if it will fit. Instant hang out spot. anyways, just tossing around ideas.

I never realized how much room there is in new dorms until I saw a room in lile with the beds stacked. pretty nice, lots of room.

Also, freaking anything beats hereford. Holy crap am I glad I am not living there. I am not in bad shape by any means, and my legs were sore after walking back and forth from hereford to Thornton/Newcomb/Physics for 2 days... And the rooms aren't even that nice there. The carpet is old and stained, the walls are dingy and old, and the rooms are pretty small. it reminds me of when I was at West Point (except no carpet). shudder. And also, the freaking air hockey table in the Dorm I was in didn't have a puck, but it DID have a lid from a Lay's stacks bottle!

ive thought about moving the bed into the same room and having a chill lounge in the other too... i think that it would work well with people who aren't messy and are on the same sleep schedule. i, on the other hand, am a total mess and so is my future roommate so i guess its good to have our things somewhat separate. also sometimes it is really nice to be able to be in separate rooms. :) also im not sure how youll get the beds between the rooms but im glad someone is gonna try it.

Wow, I think you've just made a really good point. It's a great trick for ECHOLS and RODMAN 1st year scholars who will have an easier time since they apply as incoming first-years and yet they're guaranteed a spot no matter what, if accepted.

its not really a trick, because they would have lived there anyways, and then would have been given a spot for the next 4 years. Its not like they would be cheating the system, and not applying as a first year but getting in later on. No, they just have their admission deferred for a year. The only real advantage I see is that you can scope out Brown for a year and make sure you really want to live there before you decide to come back second year.

But its not like said person wouldnt have been living there anyways. The way I see it is more like hazelorb's second part: 'the kid that got kept out because of the rodman thing', not 'the kid who cheated the system'

By "trick" I meant it was a good strategy to secure a place in Brown. While it's true you won't live there during your first-year, the advantage of applying now is that it's easier to get in when you APPLY as a first-year rather than as an upperclassman.
