Info from U of M Admissions Director

I'm not sure if someone has posted this information yet. I was recently at a presentation with a U of M Admissions Director and she said that in prior years they have received 15,000 applications in the early round and this year they have received 19,000 EA applications (because of moving to the common app). She basically said she thinks there will be substantially more people deferred in the EA round to "wait and see", although she didn't actually use the word "deferred". They predict close to 40,000 applications this year and in years going forward. She also said they are committed to getting the freshman class back to 5,900 (the 6,400 in this year's freshman class is not sustainable).

What I can conclude after hearing her is that U of M's admission rate will go down (substantially?) this year and a lot more applicants will be deferred until spring until they see what is really going on with the numbers. I think this first year of moving to the common application will mess up the process somewhat this year and make it harder on the applicants.

I don’t think so. Michigan’s yield will probably drop from 45% to 35%, forcing Michigan to accept 16,000-18,000 students.

Thanks for the depressing post

Wow, this is depressing.

I was having a bad day already.

^^^
Seems slightly radical.

**** this just broke mah heart =(… i thought i was good wit my 32 and 3.75 uw with 8+ honors/ap classes

It isn’t looking good to be under a 30 ACT at this point :(

u said it. um has been my numba 1 school i hope i get in so much… deferall is gnna kill me

I wouldn’t be too discouraged by the numbers. I think the same types of students (those with tough classes, good grades/scores) who used to get in early will still get in early. I think the changes will mostly affect more of the borderline candidates or those that just decided at the last minute to add U of M because it was on the Common App (those that didn’t do any reach-out to the school or didn’t put effort into the supplement).

I really didn’t mean for this to be discouraging news. It was really just my take on the information she gave. I do think it was helpful that she actually gave real numbers so at least people have some information.

I appreciate the info. At this point, I’ll take anything I can get as the waiting to hear on my S’s app is driving me crazy  One of the GC’s from our school thinks that the first round of decisions will probably come out around Thanksgiving.

And I, for one, will “give thanks” if it does! ;)

I have been hearing so many different dates for when the first decisions are going to come out. Does anybody have a firm idea on when first decisions may be released?

^Early December.

Let’s hope a bunch of “averages” applied. To be honest, I’m not that great of an applicant, but I am above average in grades, have a stellar essay, few EC’s. F me hope I get in, deferral will be suicide.

Sooner or later, the free lunch is bound to run dry folks. But I would not panic. This is not going to be the year. This year’s acceptance rate will drop to 45%. But in the next three years, it will drop to 30% or so.

Wasn’t the acceptance rate ~46% last year anyway?

Alexandre,
are these just your thoughts or as super moderator do you have some inside information?

thealbatross, Michigan accepted 46% of applicants two years ago. Last year, Michigan admitted 50% of applicants.

spitfire, I have no inside information. However, the same thing happened with the University of Chicago when they joined the Common Applicantion.

Alexandre
I am certainly impressed by how quickly you have the stats and I’m thinking that in Dubai I can’t even imagine what hour of the day this is for you…so thank you for taking the time to respond here and be the super moderator…

I try to keep abreast of the latest trends spitfire. Timewise, Dubai is 9 hours ahead of Ann Arbor. It is not almost 19:00 over here.
