info on intro to philosophy course

I am currently trying to pick out classes for next year. I was wondering if anyone has taken this course and could offer any insight on it. Also I was going to take 100 W to fill my axle req for a 100 english course. I know that I can look up professors on that website, but I was more curious as to whether this course is interesting or dull. Also if it would be better to take a regular english in place of the intro to philosophy course.

thanks so much!!!

I think you should stop bothering everyone on the board and make your own decisions :)

This may or may not be helpful, but I'll try. I have yet to become a true Vandy student, but I took Intro to Philosophy during my first quarter of freshman year at my old school. I think the question to ask yourself is if it's something that you're interested in. Philosophy can be hard for some people who aren't really "into it." If you're a person who likes answers, then it's not for you. If you really like learning theories and debating, then take it. I loved the material we covered. Instead of trying to figure out what the "best plan" would be, really think about YOU and your interests. Do you like to write? Take the regular class. Would you rather research/argue? Philosophy may be better. Follow your gut instinct!!

as you will find out, many courses depends heavily on how the professor teaches it. For those kinds of courses, it tends to be discussion based and you write several essays throughout the course. I would imagine Engl 100W to be quite dull. Go with Phil 100W. check professors on ratemyprofessor.com with a grain of salt.

thanks for the responses.

pasch you are annoying, i dont like you.

from what ive heard Phil 100W is completely based on your professor, so I'd be wary of taking that class. there is an add/drop period, so make sure u just show up the first day and see if u get a good feeling from the professor/syllabus, etc, and dont be afraid to visit some classes during the first few days that you're not yet enrolled in as you might find another class you like better.

Tread carefully in this area. I was a Vandy philosophy major (some years ago) and occasionally have the opportunity to make contact with an old prof. What I notice about the 100 course is that it's entirely taught by graduate students. I would imagine that the teaching is extremely uneven. There may be a couple of pretty decent teachers, but there may be some who will never make it in the field.

do you think it would be safer to take an english 100w course instead? how are these classes usually?
