Info on Other Majors

I've been searching the CMC page for a while and I haven't been able to find anything on any other majors besides international relations/econ/polisci. I really don't know what I want to major in yet, so I'm curious about the other departments too.

Does anyone have any personal experience with the Joint Science Center (specifically neuroscience)?

Anyone know anything about CMC's philosophy, psych, and english depts and how they compare with other LACs?

Since no one has touched this yet I’ll give it my best shot although I know little for comparison with other schools and really don’t have experience with neouroscience. During our campus visit the high rate of admission to medical schools was emphasized so that would speak to the strength of the Joint science center and the option remains open to take classes at Pomona. The ability to take classes at all of the 5c’s enhances every curriculum. Psychology either is or has been the 3rd largest major at CMC. Diane Halpern who is the chair of the department is a past president of the American Psychological Association. Award winning author Jamaica Kincaid, recently joined the CMC Literature faculty ( [News Release, News and Events, Claremont McKenna College](http://www.claremontmckenna.edu/news/pressreleases/article.asp?article_id=1258) ). When researching CMC’s philosophy department I came accross this quote on the Philosophical Gourmet website. “Among schools that do not offer the PhD or MA in philosophy, those with the best philosophy faculties would probably include: Amherst College, California Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, Reed College, University of Vermont, Western Washington University, and Wellesley College. The colleges in the Claremont system (Claremont-McKenna, Pomona etc.) have, collectively, excellent faculty resources for philosophy students as well.” The web link is [The Philosophical Gourmet Report 2009 :: Undergraduate Study](http://www.philosophicalgourmet.com/undergrad.asp). I hope this helps. The students out there can correct me on this if I am wrong, but as a parent the impression that I have gotten is that whatever the major CMC will approach it from a real world perspective.

I graduated from the Joint Science Department back in the mid-90s (dual major in Biology and Math). At the time, CMC was seeing pretty much 100% acceptance to Med School, tons of prestigious internships (I worked at Lawrence Livermore for two summers and two winter breaks on the Human Genome project at the height of the project, other friends worked at NIH, Los Alamos, Cold Springs Harbor, etc.), great research opportunities with professors, etc. I ended up going into a more typical post-CMC career (management consulting), but graduated with Honors from JtScience and loved the professors.

As for some of the other departments, I think CMCs literature department is underrated and has some pretty big intellectual powerhouses … several Harvard PhDs who do interesting work. Psych is a great department and they do some really cool work with autism…several of my friends who went to top 5 med schools did research and worked with the Autism center and loved it. Tons of Biology-Psychology combo type majors.

Does anyone know anything about the ROTC program as well?
