To promote a statewide conference on the growing field of biotechnology, Gov. Jeb Bush will appear in Gainesville today to dedicate a UF research center and discuss the biotechnology industry's role in Florida.

UF's $84 million Cancer and Genetics Research Complex, where Bush will speak this afternoon, will be on the "cutting edge of research," said Win Phillips, UF's vice president for research.

The center will also be the university's largest research building ever built, and one of the largest cancer research centers in the nation, Phillips said. Some officials have already moved into their new offices inside the building.

Phillips said he's grateful to Bush for helping to fund the building, which is at the corner of Gale Lemerand Drive and Mowry Road. He called it a "major contribution of (Bush's) administration."

Kenneth Berns, director of UF's Genetics Institute, said the complex would bring together scientists from around the university.

"I think that what's really nice about this center is that it really is a place where a lot of different parts of the university are interacting in a very useful way," Berns said.

Bush will also be speaking at a luncheon at the BioFlorida Statewide Conference, which will be held at the Hilton UF Conference Center at 12:30 p.m.
