Info on Warren College

Hi!
I was accepted to UCSD for the 2013-2014 year in human biology at Warren College (YAY!) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me some stuff about Warren College or the human biology major. I don't really know much and I would like to not be too clueless if I decide to go to UCSD. It's my top choice right now, but I want to visit the campus to make sure I like it first :)

THANK YOU

I’m a General Bio major at Warren so I could probably tell you a lot. Did you have any specific questions in mind?

Hey guys! I was also accepted to UCSD in Nano engineering(Chemical engineering) at Warren. I’ve heard the majority at Warren is engineering kids, is that true? Also may I know how the housing on campus is like and how the students enjoy their social life? Thank you in advance for your replies!

Hey guys, I’m in Warren College too, however as an Undeclared Major. I’m international, so what exactly does that mean? Will I be able to choose a Major after my freshman year?

My intended major was Computer Science.

@$KingsElite$: That’s so perfect :o! So here are some of my questions: (I’m sorry there’s a lot…I really know nothing about college and it’s worrying me)
QUESTIONS

 1. Which classes do you suggest I take my freshman year? Which classes do you recommend I stay away from?
 2. How difficult are the biological sciences majors? I’ve heard rumors that they’re very stressful.
 3. How’s the food for Warren? I heard Muir had the best, but I don’t hear much about Warren’s food.
 4. How much is laundry…?
 5. Are there a lot of bike thefts? Do you think a bike is a good mode of transport at UCSD?
 6. What are the dorms like for Warren students?
 7. Is it difficult to be a RA?
 8. In your opinion, is a triple room too small? (trying to decide between double and triple :P)
 9. Do you enjoy it at UCSD?

Look at the 4 year plan for human bio in warren. For your first couple of quarter at college, your classes are pretty steam-lined.

Are you perhaps pre-med? If so, then yes bio sci majors can be pretty stressful. Then again, going to college is a pretty stressful experience if you are worrying about your grades constantly.

Warren food is pretty decent. Miur dining hall is the best dining hall, but it is not like it is in a league of its own. They are all about the same IMO.

1.25 for the washing machine. 1.00 for the drying machine.

From just knowing people who got their stuff stolen, there are a few thieves here actually. Also, when it gets crowded, avoiding people while riding a bike actually proves to be quite the task ( I see people colliding sometimes). But there is still a good population who do ride bikes, so despite what I said I still recommend it.

N/A I didn’t live in Warren dorms.

Not particularly; there is a review process but I think as long as you aren’t socially awkward I think you’re good to go. Ask your future RA more about it, they would be more than welcome to tell you about it.

I lived in a triple. It was terrible.

I have a few discontent here and there but overall it is good.

Warren food is ok, a lot of times I walk in there and end up just going to this burrito place called Goody’s. I think Muir does have the best dining hall, but like the other poster said, it’s not amazing or anything.

You have to use triton cash for laundry, which is money you put on your id card. Sometimes the machines are all full and people leave their clothes in their, I take them out if they don’t come.

I really like the warren dorms. The bathroom is in the middle and the living room is in front of that. The rooms surround the bathroom and living room. I think warren dorms are really conducive to getting to know the people in your suite, b/c it’s almost like an apartment.

Triple rooms are too small.

For the most part, I really like it at UCSD. The classes can be hard, but there are a lot of opportunities to have fun too.

I got into Warren for Human Biology too! it’s also one of my top choices, so maybe we’ll end up seeing each other :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyways, I’d like to take the opportunity ask other people how easy is it to mingle with the people from other colleges? Or do people generally stick around in their own colleges? What’s the social scene like? And how hard/complicated are the graduation requirements? Thanks!

I’d say it is easy to mingle with people in other colleges. You can do this in your classes since they will be with kids from other colleges too. The only class with only Warren students is Warren Writing. I like the social scene but it doesn’t come to you. I would say the people I know just kind of hang out, like watch a movie or something. There are parties too though if you’re into that, frat parties are off campus b/c there are no frat houses here though. I think the graduation reqs are straightforward, just look at your 4 year plan on the Warren academic advising page.

Is it difficult for freshmen to get an apartment at Warren instead of a residence hall suite? What are the benefits/disadvantages of each? I have a general idea but would love to hear some input from UCSD students. Did you like whatever housing arrangement you had?

Congrats to all those who have been accepted!

I know some freshmen who live in apartments but they’re international students so that might be a factor.

Apartments have a kitchen whereas reshalls do not. You also share apartments with less ppl (4ppl vs 10ppl)

[UC San Diego Housing - Warren College](http://housing.ucsd.edu/warren.asp)

^that’s the general layout

Housing is just a hit or miss. Sometimes you get some pretty amazing ppl and other times you don’t. Personally, I’ve been lucky enough to get some pretty great suitemates while i know some of my high school friends who also go to UCSD have not been so lucky.

Doubles are rarer in Warren than triples, so don’t be surprised if you don’t get a double!

Can you switch roommates/suitemates if both sides agree to the switch?

Having a kitchen sounds awesome! And apartment residents don’t have to get as many dining dollars.

How often do you usually eat at the Warren dining hall? How soon did you get tired of the food (if at all)? I can’t imagine eating the same food every day for several months… Also, do you like the dining hall style (where you pay x dollars for each item) or would you prefer if it was a buffet style (like at Davis/Santa Cruz, where you swipe your card at the beginning of the meal and then eat however much you want? or at least that’s how it was during the summer, not sure if it’s the entire year)

Warren apartments are nicer than the dorms but I would recommend dorms if you’re a freshman because it’s easier to make friends…

QUESTIONS

 1. Which classes do you suggest I take my freshman year? Which classes do you recommend I stay away from?

Try to balance out science, math, electives so you aren’t too stressed out.
Check professor ratings, CAPE Evaluations, Grade distribution!!! Professors are important.

How difficult are the biological sciences majors? I’ve heard rumors that they’re very stressful.

Science is hard in general.

How’s the food for Warren? I heard Muir had the best, but I don’t hear much about Warren’s food.

I personally think the food taste the same everywhere. They all suck but edible. Muir isn’t that different from any other places but I think Muir has more options just because more people go there for lunch cuz it’s closest to their classes.

How much is laundry…?

$1.25 and $1 use Triton Cash. Don’t carry quarters because some machines don’t take quarters no more.

Are there a lot of bike thefts? Do you think a bike is a good mode of transport at UCSD?

You get to class faster, like leaving your dorm 5 mins before class is good enough. Without a bike, you have to leave your place like 15 mins prior to class which sucks. UCSD campus is big. I never want a bike because you can easily run into people because it tends to get very crowded during passing period. Also, if you are a girl, it could be very hard to ride your bike uphill.

What are the dorms like for Warren students?

I don’t live there so don’t know.

Is it difficult to be a RA?

I don’t think that many people actually apply so shouldn’t be that hard.

In your opinion, is a triple room too small? (trying to decide between double and triple :P)

I am in a triple and it’s **cking small. Choose double (you might end up in a triple though)

Do you enjoy it at UCSD?

Yes, No, Okay, Maybe
