My son was just accepted into the Engineering Program and I was hoping that some parents or students in Engineering could help clarify a couple of things. He hopes to become a ME and I was wondering how competitive it is to get into that specific program? Do you need a specific GPA to get your first choice? Trying to get a feeling about the school. Some of the big engineering programs my son has gotten into are really competitive when applying to programs after first year. Might be nice to be in a school that fosters teamwork rather than competition. Thank you.
DD was admitted to engineering too. I asked that question and was told that it is pretty easy to get into most majors as long as the student is in good standing.
Thank you for your response Much2learn.I sent a message to the engineering department yesterday asking same question and got no response. I also asked about the internships at the school. I was confused about whether or not you pay for the semester of school at the same time your child is doing an internship. Still no response about that either.
Student internships are most frequently in the summer. I have never heard of a school charging students while they were taking an internship.
When were we there for a Parent’s Weekend several year’s ago I remember having a conversation with someone who I thought would know about internships. I remember her saying it is the student’s responsibility to find their own internship. We had our son sending out his first applications during Thanksgiving break of his junior year. Once we started looking into the programs we realized it might have been better for him to have started sending applications even earlier. When he went back to school his fraternity brother told him about a company he was applying to for an internship. They both sent them in electronically and got offers back come for interviews really quickly. They knew a Lehigh graduate had a pretty high position in the company and they felt they got the offers so quickly because they were Lehigh students. My son had an internship there the summer of his junior year and his job offer in September of his senior year. Honestly, husband and I could not believe he found his own internship and job without our help.
Thank you Kikkydee and muchtolearn. I did get in contact with a Mech Eng. professor who answered all of my questions after calling a couple of times. The scale is tipping closer to Lehigh. Visited another school this weekend and son knew it was not the right fit. Coming to visit next Monday. Really looking forward to a great visit and a final decision.
That is so good you are listening to your son and encouraging him to go with his feelings. Picking a school is so personal. There are lots of good schools. It bugs me when people think they have to trash other schools to show their loyalty to their school. I would be very interested to hear what your son thinks of Lehigh. I really hope he likes it!!!
