My D is trying to decide whether to audition for Sam Houston State Musical Theatre or Southern Methodist University (I believe it is a theatre degree with possible minor in Musical Theatre). Any information would be appreciated.
This is an old thread, but I will jump in and say my D auditioned for and was accepted into the program at Sam Houston. She was encouraged to audition there by her audition coach, a former Broadway casting director, who said when he was casting shows he often looked to actors trained at Sam b/c they were getting high quality training. We were very, very impressed with their facilities during the audition process, but didn’t get to tour the entire campus (we have known people who went there and enjoyed it). Huntsville’s proximity to Houston means there are lots of performance opportunities for students. And the price tag, well, it’s Texas in-state tuition (I don’t know if they offer in-state tuition to out of state MT students). Although my D ultimately decided to go elsewhere, I would have been happy if she had ended up at Sam.
We didn’t consider SMU, so I have no insight there.
WTXMom thank you so much! My D did decide to leave both schools to her final list. I’m thankful to hear some information about their program and training. Thanks again!
SMU you can major in theater and minor in musical theater. SMU has produced many great stage performers as well as Kathy Bates and Lauren Graham
