informal internship vs formal program

Hi guys,

Would research done in an informal internship be better or worse than research done through a program?

informal internship: emailing and asking to participate in research
formal program: applying to a program (example: SIMR, RSI, MIRT, NIH, YSP, SIP, RMP,)

last summer i did research with a professor at stanford. i am debating whether to do research with the same professor this summer or apply to summer programs

this is for college admission purposes, obviously
i like all the types of research i would be doing

You really have to choose which most interests you. There is no all in one formula which can answer your question. Any would be an impressive undertaking.

Some of those programs are impressive because they are so hard to get into. And for you it is exposure to new people and professors. But continuing with the same is fine too. I wouldn’t look at which is better, just which is better FOR YOU.
