I got an email about an informal meeting with an cornell alum to talk about about cornell. Any feedback from others who did it. Should i do it too?

what did the email say exactly?

was it all official-looking like from Cornell or CAAAN? or was it kinda just like an unofficial thing from a random local alumni?

I’m just curious cuz I havent gotten one of those contacts yet…:(

it seems informal, so i’ll say unofficial. It is from Cornell Alumna and she wrote specifically that it is not an interview for admissions.

Yes, you should do it.

That weird, never heard of an informal interview, what would be the purpose then? For prospective students to ask questions?

It’s an alumni interview, which is informal. Definitely do it if you can to learn more about Cornell, while letting them know more about yourself. I had a great experience with mine the other day.

The alumni interviews are done through CAAAN. Like it has been said many times on CC, the meeting is not required and is just a service that we provide to help the applicant learn more about Cornell and have a chance to update the alum on any info the applicant couldn’t include in the application.

Not every applicant will receive an alumni contact. This says nothing about the competitiveness of your application, it just isn’t possible to contact every applicant.

Don’t worry about it. Supposedly the alum sends a paragraph or so to the admissions officer, but it won’t influence your app much unless you need that little extra boost or the alum interviewer has some special standing with the university.

Speaking as an alum who has a special standing with the University, I sure hope you turn down your opportunity to meet with me so that a more deserving and appreciative student can take your place.

Actually CayugaRed2005, I’m a current student so there won’t be a need. =)

Last year, my daughter got a call from an alumna asking whether she had any questions.

I just had a similar interview 2 days ago, it was just an informal meeting to talk about the school/ask questions. It probably doesn’t affect your application but I didn’t think it would look good if I declined.

do it, the alum has no say in the process, but will comment on your goals and attributes. These comments are sent to the adcomm to reveal who you are more personallly, it holds little or no weight in application besides showing interest and making you into a real person, not a page in an application. My dad conducts these interviews and never writes negative ones, he only writes great ones and not so great ones.

i did it yesterday and it was only on the phone, sadly.
I don’t know. My person was informative. but she had no prompt to start. i kind of had to ask everything and she just answered the best she could.

Civomorth what state are you in?? anyone in MN?

^ SAT2350- I’m from new york

wow what a pretentious name sat2350…

To OP… really you are being offered an interview through CAAAN and you are questioning if you should go to it.
Definitely do I went to mine and had a blast. I learned many new things about Cornell, and told them many things that I couldn’t fit in my essay. Try to pick out a quiet coffee shop for the location

I tried to schedule an interview in person, but my person was only willing to do it over the phone, so that was screwed up for me.
