Information on CGS, from the Dean

Because of some information that has been posted on this board regarding CGS, I asked for clarification from the school. Here is the answer I received:

A bell curve is used for establishing final grades.

Nearly all students in CGS are eligible to continue into their junior year at Boston University.

The retention rate for CGS is approximately 93%.

The graduation rate for CGS is approximately 83%, equivalent to those who started in one of the other schools at Boston University.

This information came from Dean Linda Wells, College of General Studies. I hope this will put to rest the misinformation being posted on this forum by PCVIRGINIABEACH, specifically that 1/3 of CGS students fail to move on at BU.

Thank you, fishymom! This is very helpful.

Thank you, FishyMom for setting that to rest.

YaHA! I knew it was curved!

Since its curved, does that mean it is much harder to maintain a high gpa than in other schools in bu?

no. it does not.

Does it make it harder to get into med school?

Being in CGS will not affect your Med school app. The only thing that will affect your app is if you do poorly grade-wise, but that’s the case for any college at BU.

Oh ok thanks for the info! I can’t wait for the fall!

keep in mind coolkid that if you’re in CGS, it may be harder to fulfill the prerequisites on time because you only get one “elective” block each semester to fulfill other requirements, such as Med school prereqs.

not necessarily. you’re able to take BI107 or BI108 in place of Nat Sci if you have a 3.0 gpa. Click the Pre-Med link under the FAQs here for more info

What if I take a summer course to complete one of the core requirements or do I have to take it in a normal semester bc of the interdisciplinary schedule?

Call the school, CoolKid, but they do offer summer courses between frosh and soph year in England - that is what my DD hopes to do!

Does this also apply to the SAR school. Would you also be able to take classes that apply to your degree in place of Nat Sci?

How much is “nearly all”?
