So much has been said in other threads about Case’s campus, culture, music, engineering… It really sounds like a wonderful environment and small, which means a lot to some students. But who can tell us more about the actual CS department? Our son wants software engineering, not really an interest in EE. This is the first school he has heard from, but so far he is very impressed and we are going to visit soon.
There is Computer Science, and there is Computer Engineering. So when you say Software Engineering…which one do you mean?

@JulesNG My son, a junior, is a physics major with a computer science minor and has been pleased with the CS courses and professors. His friends majoring in CS, have had options to work for Microsoft, Epic and Netapp, major software firms, through the placement office at Case Western. One of his friends had a summer position for small medical startup in Cleveland. The high tech job market in Ohio is strong and Case students are recruited. The healthcare/medical/software opportunities are good. Bioinformatics is also very strong at Case if that is of interest to your son. Statistics and big data are another area where Case is very strong. The students are very friendly, many midwestern students and its been easy for my shy son to find friends and also mentorship in the physics department. There is a summer research program on campus, where students can write a grant proposal and win $3000 stipend for the summer. My son also got involved in the Inamori Center and was able to attend two leadership conferences, in the area of ethics, one at The Naval Academy, all payed for my Case Western.
Notable CS type alumni include Paul Buchheit, creator and lead developer of Gmail; Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist.org; Pete Koomen, the co-founder and CTO of Optimizely; and Peter Tippett, who developed the anti-virus software Vaccine, which Symantec purchased and turned into the popular Norton AntiVirus.
