Information on Trinity in CT?

Hey everyone... I'm just going to get down to it. I want to attend Vanderilt EDI, but I need a EDII to apply to if Vanderbilt doesn't come through. I'm really considering making Trinity that school. If not Trinity, then perhaps Washington & Lee, but I really didn't want to have to take the SAT II's. Anyway, back to the point... Trinity. How is this school? I want to go pre-med with a major in Chem/biochem or something related, with a minor in psychology. Any advice? How is the campus/surrounding enviroment. What about pre-med perspectives? Professors and class rigor? I want difficult courses that will push me, but not so cut-throat it is impossible. Any advice? Here are my stats... I know for Trinity ED makes admissions go up to 64%, so that's encouraging.

(This is the most rigiorous course load of anyone else in my class this year, b/c only me any one other person are taking Pre calc and Calc in the same year, and the first to do so in many years. Also, those with hard scedules like mine don't do a varsity sport and a job.)

(I will do everything in my power to make all A's Sr. yr. -- if I do, I will be Salutatorian)
(Also note: Junior yr lowest grade is 97 [only made that low once].. not sure if that counts for something)
-This gives me a total of 11 Honors or above honors courses.

-Will have a total of 5 sciences and 5 maths by end of next yr.

-Varsity Swimming three yrs... and won a school record.

-Job over summer and Sr yr

-TN Governor's School 2006 (I completed two college level courses. History of Tennessee (HIST 2030) and Historical Geology (GEOL 1050) and recieved an A in both.)
-TN Volunteer Girls State Delegate (won and elected a Senator's position [only 20 awarded out of 500+ girls])

-ACT score: First time = 27, Second time = 27 too! Everything went up several points but science, which for some reason plumated. Hopefully a 30 in Oct. I'mma get a ACT tutor and study like no other.

-In addition, I got the lead role in a theatre preformance in Drama, and am hoping to be equally as lucky in the upcoming Musical this year.

-Volunteer at a Nursing Home, but not the typical 100+ hours yet... I'm working on it. So little time anymore. Only like 12 right now >.<

-I'm good at essays, so counting on essay to be good. (If I could ever get started)
-Student of Month twice, Soph & Junior academic award, etc.
-Major: I want to go pre-med, w/ a major of Chemistry and a minor in Psychology.

Note: I know my AP's are low, but our school only offers 5 and others conflicted with my schedule. Also, there is no 3rd foreign lang. offered at my school... not enough people sign up for them.

Thanks!!

I don't know about Vanderbuilt but with your stats don't you think you can aim a little higher than Trinity. In the universe of colleges, how did decide on Trinity after Vanderbuilt. You will get a better response by putting this on the Trinity Board. I know that it is in Hartford and near a not so nice neighborhood. I don't know what Smyrna is like but Hartford is a more urban-type city.

AlanArch, Thanks for the response and the confidence! I think, in my opinion, Trinity would be a good match for me ED. However, I am constantly told by everyone that I cut myself short on my stats. To be honest, I'm simply a perfectionist and nothing is ever good enough so I don't really see my stats as very good. I hope your right though because I was thinking Trinity was still maybe a reach.

I do want a good sized city around the campus. Smyrna is really small.. it has nothing. I wouldn't mind a small college, but with a more urban sized area surrounding it. The only reason I didn't put this on the Trinity board is because no one ever writes things there... I think there are only 4-5 threads and they are a bit older. It's not as active as some of the other boards.

Thanks again for the feedback... I really appreciate it!!

Bump 10 char

I think Trinity is a solid school, but think that you should be able to get in RD. Maybe consider a place similar to W&L, such as Colgate, Middlebury, Colby for an EDII application.

You need to relax a little bit.

Trinity is in a bad area of Hartford... i would strongly suggest visiting... I personally did not like it at all.

Trinity is a great school for those who are comfortable in an urban environment. I have heard that those who hail from more rural areas have a tough time being in Hartford---big culture shock

Trinity sits on a hill in the south end of Hartford. Off campus is not a particularly nice area, but the campus itself is very lovely. Hartford downtown can be a fun city -- but that would be a few miles north of the Trinity Campus. Malls and other shopping are not too far to the west -- again a few miles.

Should also note that Trinity is very close to Hartford Hospital.

My horse goes to Trinity with a young friend ... twelve minutes by car and you are in rural, historic, South Glastonbury.

Want to see S. Glast on video? Some of Billy Joel's River of Dreams video was shot there. Look for scenes of BJ on piano, the ferry landing, and the horses running. (The church scenes, not sure where they were shot, maybe not CT. The railroad bridge scenes, Middletown, near Wesleyan!)

Trinity is EXTREMELY northeastern preppy. Are you OK with that? Aside from your academics, being from Tenn. would be an asset for admissions geographically.

I agree. Trinity is known in New England as a bastion for rich prep school kids who couldn't hack the admissions process for more elite schools.

And if one wishes for a fun urban environment, Hartford is a poor, poor choice. One is better off attending Fairfield (equally if not more preppy, though in a Catholic way) or Quinnipiac and visiting New Haven or New York on a regular basis.

As I said before, keep in mind that being from Tenn. and applying to northern schools gives you a "hook". Use it to your advantage! How many kids in your high school are applying to northeastern LAC's? Probably very few.

wow i'm surprised with all of the bashing going on.
trinity is a fantastic school, beautiful campus. hartford scares people away, but its really not bad. obviously there are some areas where i wouldnt recommend you going, but the area around trinity is totally fine. its surrounded by hospitals and government buildings so the neighborhood is pretty stable and un-deserted. there are a ton of cute restaurants and fun bars in the area. ive lived in the hartford area most of my life and i cant remember any incidents occuring on or near campus

My D graduated from Trinity. We lived in new england then in africa, then back to the midwest. Hartford is not a great city, but there are fabulous restaurants, theatre (on and off campus), music, etc. West hartford a mile away from trinity is beautiful with cafes and high end shops.

D had four absolutely fabulous, academically rigorous years at Trin. Study abroad is amazing, and kids from williams, amherts, yale etc went to the trinity program in Rome. Yep, the rap on Trin is that it is preppy and rich, but the reputation really is 15 yrs old. Now trin is increasingly diverse, great faculty, several creative studies programs are offered for really motivated students, and the social environment is diverse.

So, if you want great academics in a urban environment (that trinity embraces rather than locks itself away from) Trin cannot be beat.

Thanks so much for all of the feeback! I couldn't have dreamed for so many responses. I am sort of torn after reading them all, I must say. I'm going to re-read and consider everything. Thanks again! I'll be sure to do some more research on other schools, as well as Trinity itself.

If anyone else has any input, please feel free!

If you can get up there, its probably worth taking a look. Research with this sort of thing can only take you so far.

That is true, but my mom is a widow, and I'm not sure how I'll be able to afford to get up there to be honest. I'll see if I can't manage though. Thanks again for all of the advice.
