Information security as a career?

Hey CC, I am a senior starting CS at a university next year. I have recently become really interested in the field of information / cyber security because my friend has taught me a lot about pen testing and network encryption. I also know a guy who is an EE and he told me that info security is a great field to get into because there is a huge lack of qualified professionals in the field b/c most CS students go into software development. To me, it seems like a good field, because every time you look on the news you hear about Apple or Facebook getting hacked, so there is obviously a demand for these people. Also, the college I am probably going to puts a good portion of their CS research money into cyber security and has a good program for that field. So, is information security a good field to get into, or is it a career dead-end? I appreciate any answers I can get.

I work in the Info Security field for a multi national bank. I happen to be looking at this forum for my son whose a senior and is going to college next year for mechnical engineering. Info Security is definately a growing field. I am hiring staff in my department while other areas of the company are being downsized. The are a lot more opportiinuties than simply pen testing also. Fo rinstnace, I run an area that pereforms generla security assesmsent of the company’s vendors, this requires a brought knowlege of all the various infosec domains.

Majoring in CS will help but most of your training will come from 3rd-party vendors. It is a cool field to get into. I know quite a few engineers who attend the “Black Hat” conventions (for security/hacking types).
