information systems major

These boards are littered with people who are seeking degrees in finance but what about the guys graduating with IS degrees? What kinds of jobs and careers can one pursue with this degree? What kind of pay can one be expecting ? (obviously not as high as IBankers).

The pay would depend on the school, but MIS is generally one of the highest paying business majors (in terms of starting salary).

There are a wide range of company types that hire MIS students including businesses with IT departments (most businesses of a decent size, and fortune 500s), technology companies (ex: software companies), and technology consulting companies (ie IBM, EDS, Accenture, etc).

From a high level perspective, the type of roles one could go into include:

business analyst - understand business processes, lots of documentation, work closely with business customers.

systems analyst - more technical than above; may have to do some coding and implementation of systems; supporting existing systems is a possibility

Programmer Analyst - software development aka programming aka coding. Highly technical job.

Project Manager - Manage projects, be very organized, make sure everyone is getting their crap done, deal with lots of people both internal and external to the company - schedule lots of meetings

Infrastructure - just lumping everyone else in here. This could be anything that supports the technology infrastructure and serves as a common resource for multiple projects. These include database admins, server admins, websphere admins, desktop support technicians, business intelligence analysts/developers, network specialists, etc.

This is a simplistic view but hopefully it gives you a better idea. There are tons of different roles, but all involve information and technology in some form or fashion.

Since the above poster covered what kind of jobs, the kind of pay can be very good too. Without bonuses, CMU’s IS averages $60k and the MIS major under Tepper is not targeted specifically but I’d guess from 60k-70k average.

Some good stuff already posted.

Some more detail on jobs for software companies:

Sales Consultants where you with with salespeople from your own company to sell products into technical environments.

Consultants where you bill time and materials to diagnose problems, improve performance, install and configure systems.

One popular and lucrative job for MIS graduates was the job of Database Administrators. But there were huge numbers of DBAs outsourced earlier this century which pushed those workers into other jobs. One thing about a lot of MIS jobs is that you have to stay current.

I have an MIS undergrad degree and a CS graduate degree and worked in MIS for about 8 or 9 years before switching over to engineering.
