Hi,
I was wondering if the IS major is good at CMU because I have heard that it is tough to get a job with one. Does CMU's prestige help?
Thanks

my boyfriend is currently an IS major at CMU and even as a freshman he says there are people always on campus looking to hire from his major. The rep of CMU makes the biggest difference between majoring in it at some other random school. Although recently articles have said IS is a major that doesn’t get you a job, coming from such a tech-focused prestigious school like CMU ends up landing you plenty of job opportunities. I wouldn’t worry as long as it’s at CMU

Totally untrue- My brother is a CMU sophomore and he had an internship the summer after freshman year, as well as one set up for this summer. From what he tells us, there are many employers looking for CMU IS students or grads.

Probably tougher to get an IS job without one.

Check out internship and jobs statistics for IS major:

Class of 2008 IS major here - plenty of jobs to be had if you are willing to relocate and build up an ok resume with either internships, tech-related volunteer work or relevant coursework (and I graduated into a crappy economy period). Lots of my peers started or worked on startups, so that’s the other route.
