Information Systems vs Management information systems

Is BBA information systems concentration major the same thing as Management information systems major.

In most cases, they are looked at as being similar or the same by employers. There may be some very subtle differences but from an employer’s standpoint, they are similar. Please be aware that there is a third one out there that sounds similar called ‘Computer Information Systems’ that has some more specific differences as it is closer to a Computer Science degree than MIS is. You will sometimes find that a BBA in Information Systems may have some specializations like Accounting systems that aren’t a part of a traditional MIS degree. That said, I return to my first statement…From the standpoint of most employers, they are viewed the same.

Computer information systems (CIS) may still be a less technical major (focused in managing rather than designing computers and their software) than a computer science major. Computer information science is more likely to be a computer science major.

Check the courses and curricula if not sure. Computer science majors have requirements like discrete math, linear algebra, and design-oriented computer science courses. The other majors tend to emphasize management rather than design of computers and their software.

Out of the 3 which major would be better for being a system analyst or a IT consultant? CIS, MIS, BA concentration in Info Systems.

With any of these majors, if you take the CS (as opposed to the MIS/IS) courses in operating systems, networks, and databases, you will have a stronger understanding of the underlying principles of computing so that you will be better able to solve difficult problems and adapt to new technologies in your work.
