Is a BS in information tech necessary to pursue a good career in this field and do certification matter to companies?

Im asking because my school (community college) I attend offers A.A.S in information tech and have classes that offer certifications in different parts of the IT field programing, networking, database etc. Im currently going into my last semester and my declared major is social science but i plan to transfer to a university for IT or IS. My question is a BS in information tech necessary to pursue a good career in this field and do certification matter to companies? Im wondering because i could easily change major to IT and just take two extra semesters and obtained my Assoicates instead going to university and taking 2 years for bachelors. Ive looked at most curriculum of the schools i may transfer to and they just seem to added a few more math and sciences.
