Ingram Scholarship?

I’m a finalist too! :)

tiktok, feel free to message me if you want to chat about it!

(I still can’t believe it either!!)

Are tiktok and I really the only finalists on here?

I was a finalist. I interviewed this past weekend. I am so nervous. We find out on Friday whether or not we got it.

The Ingram Scholars are announced on this link: [Six students chosen as newest class of Ingram Scholars - VUCast: Vanderbilt University’s News Network](http://sitemason.vanderbilt.edu/news/releases/2010/02/19/six-students-chosen-as-newest-class-of-ingram-scholars.107632). Congratulations, if any of you are among these amazing few!

Congrats to the winners! :)

Yes, I was a finalist and we were led to believe that they were taken a similar number to years before which was in the teens. They only took six. I would really like to know why they didn’t tell us the number would be so low so we all weren’t blindsided. It’s not that I expected it but I think we should have been told this year would be very different from last where they took 19!

I agree. My child was a finalist and has not received an email or anything that tells why they only went with a few. Although he wasn’t told by his interviewer that he was in, there was a sense given to all that many more would. I’m surprised from a university like Vandy that they have/are treating the finalists this way.

My daughter is a freshman and is close friends with 2 Ingram scholars in her class. They told her that 575 applied last year and only 6 were selected last year. She is going to live in a Mayfield lodge with both of them next year so this info is pretty accurate according to her.

This news story from one year ago indicates that 19 were offered the scholarship. Perhaps they did not all accept the offer.

Don’t they select some of the new class from currently enrolled students? I think I’ve heard this before, but have no idea how many, when, etc.

Yes,currently enrolled students can apply. I suspect the number of 19 included both the 6 freshman and upperclass students. My daughter could apply for next year and even though she is active in a lot of service projects and has a great GPA those projects are not great enough to get her that scholarship. It is unbelievably competitive. Congrats to those who were given this scholarship. They are exceptional people.

the 19 you are referring to as being selected were last year (2009) and they were all selected as incoming freshmen. Out of the 20 incoming freshmen who were invited to finalist weekend this year - only 6 were selected. They finalists were led to believe that the accepted numbers would be similar this year as to the last several (in the teens) and then only six? My child has talked with two other finalists and they are very confused and very let down. I can not believe that Vandy hasn’t offered up some kind of explanation as to why the low number or an email to the finalists or anything like that. It would have been very helpful for them to know at their visit that it would be a low number.

I agree that the process this year seems to be very different from prior years, which has led to much disappointment. My daughter was one of the finalists, and she was shocked to learn that only 6 students were chosen, with no explanation. They were specifically told at the inception of the interview process that money was not an issue. I wonder if the school will consider the “rejected” finalists for other merit scholarships–it would be nice if they signaled something to this very deserving group of students whose interest/passion for Vanderbilt may have waned a bit.

I would suggest that you send them an email and ask for some input or an explanation. My husband did and he has not received a reply. Perhaps if several of the parents at least ask for some input they will respond either to us or these finalists. The way this has been handled so far has soured us on Vandy.

I’m friends with a lot of Ingrams, and they’re just as surprised about the low number as yall are. There are, I believe, 14 current freshmen that received the Ingram scholarship this year and were expecting the number to be similar for next year’s class (one of my friends even told me that finalists have an 80% chance of getting the scholarship if they can make it to the final round… needless to say, he was one of the ones that were shocked the most).

Well after reading all of this, we are not going to hold our breath for Chancellors scholarships!

The Ingram program took less finalists this year because it was a weaker pool of applicants. Although they were very strong on paper, overall they did not interview well and came off as awkward or uppity. The program seeks to find well-rounded scholars who not only succeed in academics and community service, but in social skills as well. Having met most of the finalists personally, I can say that the program probably made the right decision. Giving out that kind of scholarship to kids that you are even unsure about is not a safe bet. And while the current scholars are upset at the low incoming number, I can assure you that it was not because they loved all of the finalists - they, too, wish that the pool had been stronger. Congrats to all the acceptees! Can’t wait to see you all next year!

Can’t imagine calling this group of applicants uppity. There are always a few who are overwhelmed by the process of the weekend and a few who are likely not good candidates for the program. Yes, I saw a couple of awkward ones but this happens each year and can be expected with the impact and importance placed on the event. There were several of us however who would like to have seen several more added to our program and are certain they would have been very good additions.

I am completely astounded by 13’s comments. There may be several adjectives to describe my child but no one would use either uppity or awkward to describe her and I imagine the same can be said of several. If 13 is a current scholar as the post suggests and thinks that posting those type comments on a group like this is appropriate, I am glad mine didn’t make it in to be a part of that.
