It’s no wonder there are so many students frustrated this year by unexpected rejections or waitlists!

This list should be printed out and given to every high-ranking junior and high school counselor in the country. I think far too many parents, alumni and college advisors still have the acceptance rates of the “good old days” in mind when they offer advise.

aha, Amherst sneaks in past Pomona for the lowest LAC acceptance rate and Bowdoin slides past the Williams part of the powerful WASP LAC tier…

^^–^^

It is important to remember that the numbers disclosed in early April are preliminary and subject to substantial changes in May and June. A number of schools are reporting DRASTIC reductions in admissions despite having used their waiting lists extensively last year. Duke, for instance, admitted 4,207 students (counting WL admits) but reduced the number of admits to 3,739. WUSTL reported only 4,440 admits as opposed to close to 5300 last year. Amherst, despite admitting 1240 students last year reduced the admissions to 1077. Bowdoin reported 160 fewer admissions. Such reductions do not seem tenable.

The month of May will be quite hectic for more than a few admission offices, with plenty of activity at schools that seemingly under-admitted when comparing their historical admissions.
