My S along with quite a few teammates have hit a rough patch with regards to injury. I was never concerned about team performance with regard to recruiting because my S was recruited heavily (much to my surprise) with a not so stellar team performance in both his sophomore and Junior years. This year as a senior, he will miss 2 games. Frustrating in so many ways to mention.

His sport is football and there are always a chance that something will happen. Players sitting out a few games is not uncommon. My sons situation happens to be a hamstring injury. Will this turn a college coach off? He canceled an OV as soon as the injury happened so that he could heal and not be a burden on the host while he followed the R.I.C.E recovery. I felt from what I could hear, that my S did a good job convincing that college coach of why he canceled the night before (same day as injury). This coach checks in once a week and is always making sure they are #1 with him. I think my S did a convincing job when he said we had to cancel a hotel reservation as I was planning to stay overnight nearby. My S also planned the night of the injury to visit with a private trainer the next day for sports massage to aid in recovery. It was clear that getting well for the team was his priority. That should go a long way right? The OV had to take a back seat to his recovery. Another coach at a higher division, is not phased and offered his advice on the injury and said he had a few players currently with the same injury. He was not recommending a quick return to the game.

He has enough film in the first 2 games to make a good highlight film. But, only one school (not really a top choice) is looking for one. His top 2 schools are all set with this.

How will this injury impact him with his top schools and those that are not as aggressive at this stage? Many programs not typically discussed on CC do their recruiting after the season.

Luckily, my s is not focused on this but is to trying to figure out how they will make playoffs with the injuries plaguing the team as well as his getting better to help the team. It is me that is looking at the big picture.

Any thoughts?

Hi happymom, just trying to make sure I understand, did your S tell the coaches about the injury? Or try to ride it through without telling them immediately?

There is another thread on something like this a few posts down at the moment, on unexpexpected struggling team seasons. We are in the same boat. Our team has been rocked by a few losses of enormous key players. I am lucky our player is still starting but coach is shaking up the team in a million directions, moving senior starters off 1st team and moving new kids up.

I never knew I could feel this much tension at one time. Glad also to hear it is a hamstring, I think those are not major season enders, though no fun now. :(

Son tore his ACL before senior HS season. His coach and our family knew we had to tell the coaches. While larger DI schools backed off from recruiting him, the D1AA and DIII programs, especially those who’d really been after him hard, all said they’d “continue to recruit him as if the injury never happened.” He had surgery and they did. He went to play for a D1AA school. Coaches know players get hurt.

Chicagomama,
I think I rambled a bit in my original post and it got lost that my S did share his injury with those he has spoken to since. I was hoping that my S gave a good explanation as to why he was unable to attend the OV at the scheduled time. Injury being the reason but, he was smart enough to give enough details to assure the coach that the injury and the caring for it was the number one reason for canceling and not for lack of interest. My S is very interested! The other coach/school was made aware as well because we were in the middle of providing financial information.

I did read that other thread about team performance. But, I thought this may be a little different as it pertains to the recruited athlete being injured. I hope your son is doing well with all the team adjustments his team is experiencing. This is so stressful!

Hilldweller, Thank you. I bet that was incredibly hard for you and your son. I am so glad you had a happy ending. I am trying to trust that those that are still paying attention, are ok with the injury. But, for casting the wide net purposes, I am hoping that it continues to go well with others that may be less aggressive at this time or those following his season behind the scenes.

For an already stressful process, I really didn’t need or expect this little added bonus.

Wanted to share that a D1 commit we know who is out for the season with an ACL injury found out that his school will continue to honor the commitment.

happymom hope things work out for all of us!

Chicagomama,
That is encouraging!
