innocently running

sorry in advance if this is sort of long, but i just wanted to hear some peoples thoughts on what just happened to me. i got home early and i finished my homework and ate, and at 6 o'clock, it was dark outside. i had some free time, and im a pretty good cross country runner, so i decided to go out for a run. i ran a good five miles around my neighborhood, and decided i wanted to watch tv, so i started to run back home. i took my usual path that runs by the high school thats near my house. while on a certain street, i see a group of kids that look about my age and size. ok so im running down the street, and they cut me off. heres how the conversation went (exactly how they sounded):

one of them: say mayne, you got a dolla'?

(apparently, speaking ignorantly makes you sound tough, and i didn't wanna seem like a pushover, so i responded with my "tough accent" )

me: nah

one of them: well then why you walkin down my street?

me: it aint your street

different person: say whats that you gots right there?

me: nothing (it was an ipod, not a brand-spanking new ipod either, a used, old, 1gb ipod nano that i got for 30$ from my friend)

a different person: you wanna trade? ( from i could tell, he had an ipod shuffle)

me: nah thats cool

a different one: say mayne, why you dont wanna trade with my patna'?

yet another different one: i bet you he got some good **** on it though

so i just kept on walking while they're following me, and all of a sudden, someone punched me in the back of my head. i turned around and layed the guy out. (i know, not very smart, but i wasn't thinking too clearly. im a pretty tough guy, muscular build, about 5'9, and i have lived in rough neighborhoods pretty much all my life, so i know know how to defend myself.) except theres not just one, theres at least 7 of them. the guy fell when i punched him, and the rest of them started swinging at me. i obviously wasn't going to win, but they had me circled, so i couldn't really run, and the only thing i could do was fight back. they kicked my ***, knocked out a few teeth, bruises all over my face, head, and body, and of course, they took the ipod. they left, and i was just laying there for a few minutes struggling to pick myself up. someone must have seen me from their window, because a few minutes later the ambulance came (it surprises me how no one actually came out of their homes to help me.) i didn't go to the hospital because i refused to (no health insurance). anyways, im smart enough to know i was fine, just a little bruised up. i was brought home, and i told my parents. of course , they take me to the hospital. im in the fun room typing this right now. its the hospital i volunteer at, so i know where everything is. thats it. i mean, i did nothing, didn't even look at them, and what the hell are they gonna with the stupid ipod anyway, i mean, its not worth much at all. i hate my neighborhood, every day it seems like there's something new. sometimes gunshots, sometimes just the police checking something out. this is exactly why i ride the bus for an hour to get to my school. my day started off so good too....

I used to live somewhere like that. You get thick skin and roll with the punches. Aint right but aint nothing you can do about it.

I quickly learned to NEVER go anywhere alone, no matter what.

Wow, I am so sorry! That is very scary, and in my opinion you did the right thing. It isn’t like you were fighting simply for the sake of proving that you are the tough guy. You needed to defend yourself, or at least try to prevent yourself from getting seriously injured. Hopefully they can identify the guys who did it and do something. I hope you get well and I am sorry.

Thank goodness your ok hpa10, I kinda dwell in an area of ‘‘wannabees’’ like that, haha. But seriously, why the hell would you go running in the DARK, in a BAD neighborhood, by YOURSELF. Be careful.

You: nah <— lol

^ lol, yea its just that i usually dont have time when its nice and sunny outside. and i have to run sometime.

Geez is there anyway for those kids to get caught or something? Though I doubt they will get in much trouble for it…

im glad that you defended yourself and nothing worse happened.. maybe you can run with a friend? good luck :]

I like running in the dark for some reason, it seems more peaceful and serene…I’m sorry about what happened!!!

Do homework after dark and run before dark. I think that’s the solution. Either that or ask your parents to send you to boarding school.

Carry a cellphone with you at all times. If someone approaches you, warn them once and then call the police. It might help if you went on your runs armed with something like pepper spray. No jury would convict you of assualt or anything else if you use pepper spray when you’re surrounded by 7 other people intent on beating you to a pulp. The DA probably won’t press charges.

That really sucks. I’d go to your parents and ask them to buy you a bottle of mace or some pepper spray. Or ask your parents to give you a ride to a nicer part of town where you can go on your 5 mile runs. Or ask to borrow the car.

Wow, I’d go with the pepper spray suggestion to. It sucks to hear “chin up” and “tough neighborhood”, but…

I’d second the cell phone suggestion too.

If you want to run again…invest in something defensive. My favorite is my 1 million volt taser, ebayed it for about $40 and it’s as small as an iPod. Sometimes I run with my 400 FPS airsoft pistol. Meh…it hasn’t gotten me arrested yet.

In all cases, I suggest you to just sprint away. Head home at 3 miles, you have enough energy to sprint if you need to. =\ Well, chances are you’ll never run around at night again, lol.

Glad you’re okay, that must have been a horrifying experience..D:

A Taser has legal ramifications, but the “dry tase” where you don’t actually fire the taser out is supposed to be EXCELLENT for situations like that.

There are also knockoffs that look like slightly older (~2003) cell phones, the antenna has the contact. 5 seconds = 10 minutes before they can get up, I read about it in a reputable magazine.

Yeah, the “dry tase” is excellent, it barely leaves a mark on them. >:]

That really angers me man. If I had been you , I would have just ran right through without even saying a word. Just run with a friend next time, or don’t even pay attention to those losers. You’re a cross country guy. I’m sure nobody is gonna have the patience to chase you. Good luck in the healing process man…geeze..I though i was having a bad day…tells you alot

I feel sorry for you. Get good grades, go to a good college so you won’t have to go through this again. Luckily for me, I live in a sheltered, small, rural town in southern California. It’s nickname is “the city of trees and P.H.D’s” since there are 6 colleges in my town alone, and all the smart geniuses come here after they retire. I’m in cross country, and the worst danger I have ever felt was when I was running in the wilderness park and saw a snake :stuck_out_tongue: There’s a town below us, which is really ghetto. (full of trashy white guys/Mexicans/blacks with guns and gangs) That’s why we never run there. We have 4 usual routes- one going west, one east, and two north. I mean, no one WANTS to get shot. In my school, there are so many competitive students that the wannabe guys living in ghettos are the ones who are picked on. All of us smart people are like a “gang” in that all we do is study/do extracurriculars, and make fun of the dumber kids out there.

Why are you resurrecting an old thread?

Oh whoops…erm i don’t know.I think I googled it.

■■■■■. You GOOGLED it??

LOL

wouldn’t it be sweet if you could replay that, but as a super saiyan? pretend to be normal up until they punch you. and then turn super saiyan and rip all their fingers off from their palms.

Dude, DBZ Pwns.
