Input on McDaniel College

Hi everyone was just wondering if anyone had any input or info about McDaniel College in Maryland. My D is interested in Mcdaniel she has received some info from them. They are not listed in the college forum. The only thing we found out was that it was known as Western Maryland College Thanks for any info joekel

There’s a good writeup on McDaniel in Loren Pope’s “Colleges that Change Lives.” You can also get info on McDaniel on the Colleges that Change Lives website.

Visited this summer with D. Nice little campus and pleasant people, although she felt that their photography made the campus look more impressive than it was in real life.

She was also interested to have the admissions rep demand to know her SAT score during her interview, even though she told him repeatedly that she would be applying under their [apparently not very well supported] SAT optional program. Decided not to apply, mostly because the school isn’t strong in her planned major.

^That’s not that odd if she actually DID take the SAT.

After all, some people might not feel their SAT was “very good” but perhaps he has seen a trend of people underestimating themselves…and suspected that the girl may have done well enough to for it to aid in her receiving merit aid or something, thereby making the school more attractive to her.

The people I know who go to McDaniel like it, and are very nice people. But one of them said she felt pretty stifled by junior year due to the campus and surrounding town’s small size.

I visited several times and it is a nice, quaint campus and town, but I too felt stifled. If you prefer a lot of hustle and bustle and big city/town action, not really the place for you :P.

My understanding is that McDaniel is a very safe, nurturing environment for B-/C+ students who need extra academic support. We have seen students with low B averages and as low as 1000 on the SAT be accepted. Most of our applicants who have applied there have been accepted, so some B students use it as a safety school as well.

My son was accepted there with similar SAT score and even lower GPA, and we were very grateful that a school like that existed! He didn’t end up going there but we were impressed by the nurturing environment.

My D went to McDaniel for two years then transferred because McDaniel did not have her major. But it was a good school and gave her a solid background. She was accepted for transfer to schools like American, GW, and U Maryland. She befriended her professors and was treated with respect. Very nurturing supportive academic environment. Overall, she is grateful for the solid academic background (small classrooms/no teaching assistants etc) from Freshman year on. Only was unhappy with the geographic isolation.

McDaniel has a very good reputation here in Maryland for strong programs and very decent liberal arts offerings. They also are known to be fairly nurturing.

I can tell you that at my son’s accounting firm, which is one of the top 50 largest firms in Maryland, they hire a number of McDaniel kids are interns if they are recommended by the accounting department. There seems to be some kind of pipeline between McDaniel and my son’s firm, Bond Bebee CPA.
