Input on This Degree Path

I'm currently an engineering major, going into mechanical when I hit junior year. I really love physics as well as the knowledge of application behind engineering. My dream career would be anything from bridging the gap between future technologies (stuff like nanotechnology, new sources of alternative energy, maybe even something that hasn't been discovered yet, etc) and current capabilities of application, to designing devices for research and experimentation in the field of physics, and anything between.

So I was thinking:
Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Physics to a graduate degree in Applied/Engineering Physics.

The reason I don't want to just take Applied/Engineering Physics the whole way is because I really do want to obtain knowledge in Mechanical Engineering and also I can't guarantee I will be able to attend graduate school and I'm not sure I could do much with just a bachelors in Physics anyway. Not to mention I feel like this would also feed my intellectual curiosity. Let me know what you think and if any of you have had success doing something similar.
