Ahh, starting a charity. lol. I'm going to the Secretary of State's office tomorrow to get our articles of incorporation approved, and then it's on to filling out state and federal tax exemption forms. Then it's on to calling the rest of the local businesses and mailing off the rest of the letters. All of this with no assistance from anyone of course. :]

Are you starting an actual 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, or just an informal thing you're calling a "charity"?

Haha. I live in Beijing, China chillaxin. Therefore, the tax exemption and all doesn't apply here. It's an actual non-profit org though.

How bout: "Untitled"
OR
Society to Help the Underprivileged and The Underrepresented People (SHUT UP)

chillaxin:

How do you start a formal charity like your own?

I noticed that you live in Texas, so procedures will be different in the two states. Where I live, you have to submit your Articles of Incorporation to the state. Then, you have to write up bylaws and fill tax exemption forms, one for the IRS and one for the state. Basically, it's a bunch of legal mumbo jumbo and paperwork, so I'd recommend getting a self-help book. Attorney fees are insane (somewhere aroudn $1000).

The entire process takes about half a year, and there's a cost of between $250 and $750 to do everything. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me! :]

Thanks, chillaxin. Good luck with your charity!
