Let me precede this by saying that I know that Georgetown is one of the most selective schools in the country, and one of the most prestigious as well, and I do not post this thread to incur anyone's wrath or to upset anyone.

But ever since I decided on attending Georgetown this past spring, I've been almost reluctant to tell people that it's where I am going to college because it's not impressive enough. I know, Georgetown is amazing, but I feel a tinge of inadequacy whenever I'm talking to people going to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, UPenn, Brown, Williams, or other top-notch schools with similarly low acceptance rates.

I recognize that it is incredibly self-important, snobbish, and even ridiculous for me to feel this way, and I've tried very hard to accept the fact that Georgetown is an amazing school, but I still have a sense of inferiority when talking about Georgetown to those going to other prestigious schools. What can possibly explain this feeling? How can I rid it from my psyche? What's wrong with me?

A common response I get from many people in my community, mostly people who know UC and Ivies. I guess it's a sight to be experienced, the Georgetown experience that is. I mean, we haven't even left yet, and from what I hear, the GU experience is amazing. =).. So come a few months from now, when you party hearty in New South (.. err.. yeah.. New South.. man, am I developing dorm pride already?) or anywhere else on campus.. you'll know that Georgetown's not inferior.

Besides, Harvard studies too much, New Haven looks better in the dark, you'd have to associate yourself with a house pretty soon in Princeton (don't forget popping your collar.. ;).. Stanford's too hot some times in the year, UPENN's ranking has peaked, Brown.. two words: Rhode Island.. and Williams.. purple cow?

All of the above-mentioned schools are highly revered academically and are immensely respectable. But the quality of those schools by no means makes Georgetown an inferior one. Besides, you have D.C.! What more could you possibly ask for?

woot woot! I come from Mexico, I'm gonna be a sophmore, and people had NO idea what Georgetown was. When i got back and told everybody about meeting the res of Nigeria, the pres of east Timor, talking with Madeline Albright on the elevator, seeing protests because the King of Jordan came to talk, and teh fact that I could carry a ver intelligent conversation on world affairs with ppl twice my age, made people notice. Maybe you should be the one that gives Gtown a reputation. gtown is really awesome. I understand your regret, I felt teh same way, I though maybe I shgould ahve gone to a bigger name school, I feel no regrets AT ALL. I've had the best year of my life!

MJS, I totally know how you feel. At my high school there have been a few Ivy-accepted people that are glorified every year, and I felt Georgetown could not compare to Stanford or Princeton. And my parents thought I was crazy to turn down U Penn for Gtown, since Penn is ranked way higher on that US News World Report thing (or whatever it's called).

But think of it this way: YOU chose it, out of the MANY colleges you were accepted to. I had the hardest time choosing, but always came back to Gtown. You chose it, so you must feel it's the best choice for you. Not "right choice", just best for you. If I truly cared more about rankings and not the best fit for me, I would've picked an Ivy. But I think you just learn to see that OF COURSE Georgetown is prestigious and OF COURSE it's respected.

I know how it is to maybe feel inferior when people say, "Oh, I go to Harvard". But Georgetown most definitely has things those other big-shot schools don't, and though those schools sound impressive, certainly not everyone can succeed there. It's not a one-size-fits-all. Georgetown isn't either, but I think if we picked it, out of the many, then it has the BEST chance of fitting us well.

I'm c/o '09 so I don't know what college is like. But I'm confident frosh year will be amazing! I hope you think so too. :)

I think Georgetown is an amazing school. You should be proud of yourself instead of worrying what other people will think of you. I think your insecurities will be gone once you actually start attending.

that is amazing, i had the exact same feeling this past spring as a transfer. let me precede by saying that i spent a year and a half working hard at my university simply to transfer to Georgetown. It was absolutely, positively, my dream school since I was in highschool. To make a long story short I applied senior year HS, got rejected, I applied after freshman year, got rejected (only had one semester of coursework), applied again this year and got in. At the time it was the happiest day of my life. I turned down Cornell, UVa, Northwestern, Wash U., and NYU Stern all because of this insane (maybe irrational) desire to attend this Georgetown University. Oddly enough, after a few days I began to question my decision. Georgetown was not the most prestigious school I got into (debatable), it wasnt particularly reknowned for its economics program, Washington DC is fun but its no NYC, etc. Not gonna lie, I also felt a little uneasy about going to a jesuit school when im not a jesuit-only to the extent that i just felt it was an unnecessary part of my college education. My uneasiness quickly turned into regret. Cutting to the chase, I got off the waitlist at Columbia and have decided to go there. My advice to you is (dissenting from the majority opinion), don't ignore that feeling. If you can't rationalize why you chose Georgetown maybe think about transferring. Even if you don't think its a great school, you are a step above those who transfer from CCs or many first and second-tier schools in the application process. goodluck.

I used to feel a bit like this sometimes, second-guessing myself and whatnot. But once you've actually spent some time at Georgetown, if you truly like it there and feel a sense of belonging, then those doubts tend to disappear. You can always play "what if," but if you're happy where you are then you have no reason to do so with regret.

I live in NYC and for some reason, everyone thinks Georgetown is ivy league. I dont know why, maybe many people just dont know much about colleges lol.

Anyway, when I was younger I always knew that I wanted to go to a competitive university. I didn't know many schools. I knew Havard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, and I knew Georgetown which really says a lot for a person that thought Duke was a terrible school prior to this year. Ha. So dont feel bad about how Georgetown 'sounds' to others because people who know their schools, know georgetown.
