[insert intriguing subject line here]

Hi! :-)

Well I'm here posting a new thread for the same reason everyone else is: chance me? Oh, and this doesn't read as long as it looks.

Biography in 60 words or less: I'm an Asian female who lives in Arizona. My family is stable, I'm straight, and nothing exciting (read: depressing - for which I am thankful) has ever happened to me in my life. Besides playing jilted lover a few times - and who hasn't, in the marvelous journey of high school - I'm, well, pretty normal. (53)

GPA: 4.0 unweighted (we don't have weighted?)
RANK: 11/699 (10 valedictorians)
CURRICULUM: All top-level, all A's, all the time. 6 AP's this past year.
SAT: 2250 (780 CR, 780 M, 690 W), retaking in June
SAT II: 790 Chinese, 800 Math II, 750 Spanish
PSAT: 240 (entirely irrelevant, I know)

CLUBS:

The Random Acts of Kindness Society: President and Founder (11, 12)
Student Body Elections Supervisor (12)
Youth In Government: Vice President (11, 12)
Orchestra: Secretary (9, 10)
A Cappella (highest-level choir at my school, no formal vocal experience, 12)
NHS, Acatecs (Gifted Students' Club)

VOLUNTEERING:

Sales associate at OfficeMax, 12 hrs/wk (August 2006 - March 2007)

GOALS/DREAMS/OTHER DISAPPOINTMENTS IN THE MAKING ;-) :
I plan to major in business/economics/something political?. Likely business. I want an international focus, but a top school is a top school.

Penn (Wharton)
Georgetown (McDonough, maybe SFS)
Washington University in St. Louis (Olin)
NYU
UMich (Ross PA?)
UC Berkeley (UCLA?)
UChicago
USC
Harvard, Stanford, Columbia.

Good stuff. Thanks! :-)

You know, I had been so hopeful that my subject line would be a good lure...

4.0,2250
and you're asking people your chances....
you're a competitor everywhere and a good one infact.

Just a question, how can you be speech captain 9-12 grade?

Anyways, here's some wild guesses:
Wharton-reach
Georgetown-low match
WashU-reach
NYU-match
UMich, I'm assuming Ann Arbor?-match
UC Berkeley-low match
UChicago-slight reach?
USC-match
Harvard-uhh high reach
Stanford-high reach
Columbia-reach

List more about what you've done to the clubs you're involved in. What have you done as founder/president of the Random Acts of Kindness Society? Elaborate please.

Penn (Wharton)- Reach
Georgetown (McDonough, maybe SFS)- Match/Low Reach
Washington University in St. Louis (Olin)- Low Match
NYU- Low Match/Safety
UMich (Ross PA?)- Safety
UC Berkeley (UCLA?)- Match
UChicago- Match
USC- Low Match/Safety
Harvard, Stanford, Columbia.- High Reaches for anyone

How is stanford a high reach with 4.0/2200? Penn isn't a reach, he has a decent shot at them especially since he's speech captain for all 4 years!

These guys seem to be bitter about your stats hahaha. All of the ivys are crapshoots, so there's no "match" unless you're some RSI freak. So make sure your letters of reccomendation and essays are superb, and I believe you have more than an excellent shot at HYPS.

A 4.0 doesn't mean anything for Ivy's. Neither does a 2200. Most people at Ivy's have been presidents of multiple clubs. You have as much of a chance as your average applicant. Letters of recommendation are okay but Ivy's mainly look at your essay. Don't make it a drag. Make it stand out from other essays, not with highly intelligent seeming words, but with originality and thoughtfulness. Good luck!

Hey, thanks guys! As for Speech and Debate, I've been captain since 10th grade. (I listed position and then years involved, in general, sorry) It's an interesting situation- the club just got back on its feet when I was a freshman so we've been kind of rebuilding and I stepped into the captain role after one year. I think the leadership there is more valuable than my tournament winnings (which have been very modest), so it's not too bad.

TRAKS is a quirky club. We stay anonymous so no one but certain members of the administration and faculty know who we are. We do little projects around campus (stuffing little notes into lockers, selling bracelets for the Boys and Girls Club) to help get people to you know, be aware of altruism. :-) I'll be the first to admit it's not overly substantial, but it's original.

Anyway, I mostly wanted your input on the non-Ivy schools - I don't know much about them, or many people who go there so the input is great. Thanks & keep it coming!

Anyone else care to chance? (I feel like this is some poker game)

Most people would kill to have those stats. So long as you show a personal side in your essays and show that you're more than a 4.0/2250, you should do fine anywhere you apply.

Actually, you're applying to some competitive programs in the non-Ivies you have on that list. I think you're a good shot, but careful with schools like Ross @ Michigan... if you don't get into the business program later on, you might not be happy with that. And if you're going to do business, SFS is harder to get into at Georgetown, I think. Hmm... UChicago... still haven't figured out what they want, but their application was pretty crazy, and I was pretty crazy in response, so maybe that's why they let me in, haha. No idea about some of the other schools, although Harvard, etc. are crapshoots for just about anyone.

So... Stern, which is the only one I can give a detailed opinion over... stats are good. You're above the average SAT score of 1441/1600 (about 2160/2400), your ECs are good, and you've had some seriously good work experience. I wouldn't call it a safety (because there are people with 1540/1600 SATs, etc. who got rejected this year), but you have a very good shot.

yeah i'm really hopeful about stern because it seems like the most "match" (matchiest?) of the schools. and yeah, ross pa is crazy to get into lol... if i got in, that would probably guarantee my going

Here's the thing about Ross (I hope I'm not mixing this up with another school): you apply to Michigan, and then either after one year or two years, you apply to Ross. Admission to Michigan doesn't guarantee admission into Ross, because it's a seperate admissions process later on. Now, if you keep up the good work, you're probably in, since it's a 50% admissions rate into Ross from Michigan. :)

Penn (Wharton)- Biggest Reach on the list. They discriminate harshly against asians.
Georgetown (McDonough, maybe SFS)- Match
Washington University in St. Louis (Olin)- Match
NYU- Match
UMich (Ross PA?)- Safety
UC Berkeley (UCLA?)- Match
UChicago- Match
USC- Safety
Harvard, Stanford, Columbia-Reach, but they're a reach for everyone

Thanks... I'm really surprised how many people think I stand a good chance at all the schools besides the obvious Wharton and Harvard. A friend of mine (with better numbers than my own) was rejected from Georgetown this year (though he applied for something political) and I've been disheartened ever since.

& on Michigan, yes I'm pretty sure that's how it goes... but they have their new program to guarantee admission into Ross for high school seniors, but something like 60/1000 got in this year, lol.

Yeah, Ross PA is definitely a reach. UMich LSA would be a safety/match though. Also, I think the admit rate is around 30% this year for the UM freshman that applied for Ross.

Yeah... good friend of mine will be going to UMich in the fall but for LSA. I don't know how well I'd handle the cold though :-)

This is me trying to get more replies. I'm so needy...
