Other: First generation, school has about 500 kids each grade, very, very competitive, one of the top public schools in the state.

Also, extremely high trend in grades and in rigor of courses. I started working my butt off during sophomore year after an abysmal freshman year. 3.2 GPA->3,7->3.8->4.0 after that.

High School Information from the Graduating Class of 2009Disregard if you don't care***

Just to give you an idea, these are some stats from last years graduating class.
2 went to Cal Tech(na)
1 went to Columbia(na)
2 went to Cornell(na)
1 went to Duke
1 went to Harvard(na)
1 went to Johns Hopkins(na)
1 went to UC-Berekely(na)
1 went to NYU(na)
1 went to Northwestern(na)
1 went to Notre Dame
2 went to UPenn(na)
1 went to USC
1 went to Yale(na)
Rougly 90 kids went to U of Michigan, which is nearly 20%
Rougly 90 kids went to MSU, which is also nearly 20%

na means they definitely did not get a scholarship for atheletics to the school.

So with all this info, what would my chances be?

How deep into the top 30% are you?

Somewhere around 25%

It’s your rank that will hurt you the most.

False, you’re a strong applicant for all of those schools. From what you’ve said, it sounds like your rank has been influenced by your Freshman year. Admins like to see progress and improvement, and you’ve obviously shown that. Your test scores and GPA are excellent.

I should be more clear.

My school doesn’t rank. However, my counselor will write the decile on the recommendation if they specifically ask for it, but it’s not like you really get a number, like a lot of other schools.

Anyone else?

If a decile is given, it will hurt you. Top schools like kids to be in the top 10%.

Your upward trend will help you, but that doesn’t change your rank. You will have to compell the adcoms in some way to be one of the non-top10% kids they accept.

This isn’t meant to be disparaging–you’re a strong applicant in a lot of ways, but if your rank is indicated in any way (whether that be exactly number or decile) on your application, it will work against you.

My high school all ended up going to UNC… so I can tell you for sure with your scores you’re a shoo in there.

I would say you are probably in/ high match at U Mich they love in state kids and high ACT scores haha
