@Madison85 a quick google search turns up many news outlets reporting that he is divesting those options.
Seems like it would be more likely to be a cold, one of the colds caused by a coronavirus.
This may answer my question above:
https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/immune.html
It seems convalescent plasma may work to save a life, but that patient may not have any significant immunity to a second infection because their immunity was “borrowed” from another source.
Masks protect hamsters!
Okay…who sewed the hamster mask? Did they have the elastic earloop thingies or did they have the t-shirt ties?
Where the hamsters social distancing?
Seriously, I appreciate the laugh I got from visualizing this image.
But in humor - one often finds truth.
Yeah, I read that report on the hamsters testing. I’m not convinces it tells us what we really need to know. But I also found it humorous to picture the little furry guys with masks on.
Here’s a description of the hamster masks: https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3084779/coronavirus-hamster-research-proof-effectiveness
They put masks on the whole cage instead of individual hamsters. Then they used a fan to fan the hamster breath from the infected cage to the uninfected cage. If no “mask,” 10 of 15 hamsters were infected after seven days. If a “mask” on the uninfected cage, 4 of 12 were infected. If a “mask” on the infected cage, 2 of 12 were infected.
Also, the hamsters infected by injection were sicker than those who contracted the disease from the air.
Jokes off. I am seeing 1,500 unemployed UW Medicine employees. The Governor finally said it is OK to see a doc or a dentist. Ugh. I guess I can call my doc now and hope it was not a stress fracture that healed in a wrong way…
Thx for making me laugh.
Massachusetts just did their big r
It’s sad. Hospitals are laying off like crazy… some of the same people that risked their lives going to work and caught the virus. No one will be spared in this downturn.
Got a letter from our dentist… can come for a cleaning now - with a caveat. Have to have a negative Covid PCR test taken no earlier than 2 days ago. The letter says visit clinic such and such… they know who sent you. How do you like that?! This dentist is all the way into gadgetry… so I bet if he can get his hands on that Alere machine, he will get it up and running.
Are they hard to get a hold of? It’s not a bad idea… I think these things should be everywhere… it could be years before a vaccine…even if they are only 90% accurate, it would catch alot. Imagine the business they could get- free test and dental work. I’d like to see them in schools, airports, doctors offices etc.
I am not sure if a dental clinic will meet the definition of “point of care” as these machines are only licensed to be employed at the POC or more complex labs. It probably will. Regarding testing everywhere, we had a discussion of this up the thread… yes, it is a good idea but we need a faster and cheaper and hopefully more accurate device… that can be operated by dummies.
| I know folks are working on it… |
Not yet. You will mostly just have to go to a local lab like quest and get the test.
Plus, even if the machines were available to use outside of POC/lab, they are in short supply. I am sure Abbott and Cepheid are bending over backwards to ship their respective systems out of the door, and I am positive there is a high demand. But they can only make so many…
The Alere SARS antigen is a FIA lateral flow test , not PCR.
We are talking ID NOW. That technically is not a PCR either. It is isothermal amplification, but the analyte is the same: viral RNA. For the antigen test to be deployable, it needs to use a sample that can be taken in a non-invasive manner (definitely not blood or plasma). Spit is ideal. Lick the sensor and watch it spit out the result (pun intended. )
@BunsenBurner, I made a statement to clarify the following .

Yes, I am talking about the ID NOW machine (Alere) that runs an isothermal amplification. That is apparently approved for POC use and has better 95% accuracy if used properly. Not sure if there are any antigen tests that are at least as good as that.
