Insight into Federal Aid and FAFSA

I am truly amazed how helpful you all have been Thank you so much.

And in terms of the question about summer income, my fiance and I studied abroad full time during this past summer and did not hold jobs while doing so.

"Forgot about simplified needs for independent students … that would apply. However, the most important thing is to meet the deadline for the state grant, as this sounds like it nets more money than a Pell would bring to the table. Are you receiving the grant referenced above? If not, then you don’t need to worry about that deadline, as you won’t be married by that deadline, anyway. If you are, you will want to meet the deadline. "

No, I am under the impression that I will not be independent by the time of the deadline.

Another silly question, but I am assuming that I can file my own taxes, right? Everyone I have ever talked about taxes with referred to having someone file them, but I am guessing that is because they had much more money and assets. Thanks.

P.S. How do I quote a post in this forum, I check the box but it does nothing

To quote you put:

words you want to quote/*quote

Yes you can file your own taxes. However if you have no income then you are not required to file taxes. If you have income but are below the income cut off ($5700 - if it is all earned income - for a single person that may e claimed as a dependent on someone elses tax return) to be required to file then you do not have to file, but may wish to do so if your employers deducted taxes (you would get a refund).

Calculate how much of your scholarship will be considered taxable income as any in excess of tuition and fees is taxable. Of course, if this amount, added to your earned income from a job, is below the $5700 income cut off, you do not need to file.

If possible, I would NOT file FAFSA until after you’re married. If you file now, you’ll have to use parent income because you would have to say that you’re single.

If you wait, you might qualify for Pell.
