Insight needed: Choosing classes for first semester

Hey, guys! I’m headed for orientation in less than a week and I’m finally sat down to decide what classes I want to take for my fall/spring semesters. I think the standard at BC is 5 classes a semester and just going through the course catalog, I saw a lot of classes I would be into and I’m trying to optimize my schedule for practicality, but also towards my interest. I’m going to be in the Honors program (which I still don’t quite understand why it’s considered its own major) and I haven’t quite settled on a major, but I most likely will end up double majoring. I’ve been playing around with the idea of being a bio/psych double major or a compsci/communications double major, two of my less radical pairings.

So here are my questions:

1) I do have AP credit to place out of the writing core. Is this recommended? I know I am capable of writing well, but I don’t know if high school has adequately prepared me for writing college papers.

2) If I do choose to take a writing core course, is it mandatory for me to take Western Cultural Tradition I, as part of the Honors Program? And will that also fulfill a theology core at the same time? Does being part of the Honors Program and taking Western Cultural Tradition I & II mean I will not be able to take Perspectives as a freshman?

3) Are we only allowed to fulfill the core with classes listed on their Core Curriculum webpages? For example, I could only fulfill a social science core with one of the following from http://www.bc.edu/content/bc/offices/avp/core/coure-courses/core-social-science.html

4) If you can, please share the schedule you made for yourself for fall and spring semesters of your freshman year so I have a better idea of what my schedule should look like in regards to the core and choosing electives.

Thank you for reading and any help you can provide!

I’m just a parent but I do know that you can AP-out of the writing course. You can also AP-out of a lot of the core courses which is very helpful especially if you double major. Your questions will be covered and answered during orientation as you will discuss all this with your student orientation leader and advisers. This orientation is designed for you to go over registration, formulate a preliminary academic and extracurricular road map and to make the entire process easier for you as well as breaking the ice, becoming familiar with the campus, etc. Your group will be assigned a time when you actually register for the fall classes before you leave orientation and you will have lots of guidance.

+1 to collegecarla’s reply. Go ahead and get input on this forum, but don’t make any decisions until your orientation. You will get lots of good information there.
