Insights from a Senior

^ I agree it is sad. But she is very resilient and will make the best of it. TBH, I wanted to make some suggestions regarding their list but the family never asked and I felt uncomfortable addressing things with them as they tend to be very sensitive. Regrettably, I think OU application was a not very well thought out and they never saw themselves actually going there. When the offer came in, it was the best offer for them financially.

@goingnutsmom I sure hope they have factored in the all the fees and this year’s 12% increase in fees and room and board. OU is still a great deal for NM but if OU wasn’t well thought out in the first place, I’m concerned that they might not know the OOP cost for the remaining years. This year the scholar’s office is predicting OOP expenses for NM Non-Oklahoma Resident: $7,000 for the first year and $8,800 each year thereafter. This is based on taking 15 credits per semester my D’s OOP expenses will be higher because she’s taking 17 credits, also there are extra fees for the semester abroad program if their DC plans on that. These are only estimates but expenses always seem to go up each year. Free tuition is great but the fees are a killer!

The only thing worse than going to a school you are less than thrilled about is finding it is unaffordable after your first year!

I hope her parents have thought this through because I’m sure that she’ll ‘find her people’ and end up loving OU!

Yes, I heard that the fees at OU are something that surprises students/parents. I think that they were looking at $10,000 a year for what they could contribute. So I think that they will be OK. I’m hoping for her sake that she will learn to love her experience at OU.

What local places would a student appreciate a gift card from for a slurge meal? Any dinner and a movie places like Alamo Draft House? She’ll have a car so it could be someplace in OKC. I was thinking of picking up some local gift cards while we are there move in weekend and sending them throughout the year.

Warren for the movies.

I spend altogether too much money at the Warren, so that’s a great idea. As far as restaurants, The Garage and Tarahumara’s are some of my favorite places to go in Norman.

I’m a huge fan of Asian food, so a gift card from a place like Full Moon Sushi, Thai Delight, or Chae Modern Korean in Oklahoma City would be hugely appreciated.

What sort of food does your daughter like?

Thanks for all the suggestions! She’s mostly vegetarian but will chicken and fish - not shell fish- occasionally.

There’s a restaurant called “Local” that she’d probably like.

Also Scratch in Norman. I’ve never been there but I’ve heard great things about it from a vegan friend.

Scratch is actually 100% what I meant to say. Local was a similar restaurant that closed this past winter, so buying any gift cards there is not a great recommendation.
