Ran across this story which will air tonight on CNN. The determination of many of our youth never fails to amaze me. From scrubbing floors to Ivy League: Homeless student to go to dream college - CNN.com

Great story. Over the years I have seen similar ones, similarly inspirational, but I never get tired of reading them. Thanks for sharing it.

Hi Grad,

Thanks for this link sharing. This is such a Inspirational Story. Dawn Loggins shows that nothing is impossible if you are concentrating on your goal. Please continue sharing such inspirational stuffs. This is called real story hero’s just coz they never give-up.

Thanks.

70’s grad- GMTA. I was just about to post this and checked first to see if anyone had. I cried reading this, then passed the computer to my husband who cried as well.

I will definitely be sharing this with my D’13 tomorrow.

I really wish we could figure out how/what makes these kids be able to keep their eyes on the prize. The majority of kids that come from these horrible sorts of backgrounds just end up repeating the mistakes of their elders.

D

Reminds me of the Dave Matthew song:
[Dave Matthews Band - Funny The Way It Is Lyrics](Dave Matthews Band - Funny The Way It Is Lyrics | LetsSingIt)

One thing is very inspirational to me is composition of my D’s Medical School class - my estimate (do not know exact numbers) is that most are Asians, some still have accents, many have parents who do not speak English much, tparents might not even driving as some were driven by students’ siblings to attend some ceremonies. These students overcame much more than others and in addition they are ORM, which means that they have to have stats better than others to be accepted at any place. I knew about it before hand, but I did not realize how many of them are getting where they want to be despite of everything else in their lives. Yes, it must be correct that 97% as a grade is Chinese “F”.

Sorry, but I hardly think that having parents with accents or parents without drivers licenses or being ORMs compares with being homeless and abandoned by ones parents and having to work as a janitor before and after school just to survive.

But that’s just me.

My parents still speak with accents (and my dad worked 2 jobs while going to college to support us), but I don’t think we come close to what those kids had to over come. Kudos to them.

Really. What all did they overcome, Miami? Maybe they had some adversity, but I don’t think it is a comparable situation.
