I turned off the notifications on the Instapot community because there are TOO many postings! However, I try and go in once or twice a day and do a quick scroll for anything that looks interesting. Not sure if I posted this one before, but it came up this morning and I have to say it looks GOOD!

Yum - that one does sound good abasket. Indian style dishes seem well suited to the IP.

I adapted this recipe from Mark Bittman for the Instant Pot. It’s a quick and easy veggie dish, and yummy too. Start the basmati rice in the rice cooker when you start the dal.

Chana Dal (split chickpeas) New Delhi style

1 cup split chickpeas (chana dal) [buy at Indian grocery store]
1 1/2 t turmeric
1/2 t ground cardamom
1 bay leaf
1/2 t salt
2 t neutral oil
6 whole cloves
4 large garlic cloves, thinly sliced
1 t hot red chili flakes, or to taste
3 T chopped fresh cilantro

Combine chana dal, turmeric, cardamom, bay leaf, salt and 3 cups water in Instant Pot. Steam for 30 minutes. Remove bay leaf and whisk dal for one minute.

To make tadka (flavored oil), put oil in saucepan on medium-high heat. When hot, put in cloves; sizzle for 30 seconds, until fragrant. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until medium brown. Stir in the red chili flakes.

Pour the tadka over the dal. Garnish with cilantro.

I serve this with plain basmati rice.

Thank you @“Cardinal Fang” and @abasket
As I said I’m inexperienced at cooking lentils and Indian cuisine. Some of the ingredients I had no clue as to what they are. I’ve also learned Dal is made with a lot of different beans. in my pantry I had green lentils and orange. I’m assuming the lentils aren’t interchangeable. I discovered a small Indo China market today near my house. They had an odd mix of items from different cultures. I was able to find Urad dal and Ajiawn seeds there. They didn’t have Chana dal. Since I bought the Urad dal I’ll try Abasket recipe first.

I have it in IP. Hope it isn’t too much liquid. Both those other recipes call for half the amount of liquid.

@mom60 which recipe are you trying and how did things turn out???

@abasket - the instant pot urad dal. I’m pacific time zone so it’s still in instant pot. I’ll let you know how it comes out.

Reporting back in on the first recipe in post #256 by @abasket.
When I opened the IP it looked like a soup which wasn’t what I was going for. I ended up straining the lentils and discarding most of the liquid. The end result was delicious. My H felt it was my most successful attempt in the IP. I served it with basmati rice, cilantro, fresh chopped tomato and plain yogurt.
I didn’t have nigella sativa so left that out. I didn’t have hot curry powder so I added a couple of fresh Thai chilies that I had in my refrigerator and just used regular curry powder. I don’t like spicy so I left the chilies whole. My H ate them with his serving. He loves super hot spiced food. Subbed in vegetable broth for the chicken.
What I would do next time would be to cut the liquid amount in half. I give the recipe a thumbs up and I would make it again.

Great to know! Figuring out the liquid is still a bit difficult for me. Or figuring out how to thicken it! Glad it worked out!

Dinner tonight courtesy of instapot - make the potato salad early in the day, then made applesauce with some apples that had been hiding in the frig for a while. Finally did @allyphoe’s ribs and some green beans in the microwave. Except for the finishing of the ribs no oven involved and all was delicious. I am getting used to this now. http://www.isavea2z.com/homemade-pressure-cooker-applesauce-recipe/ http://pin.it/IYTrq19

I want to cook/grill the Costco marinated rubbed ribs tonight. I usually just cook them fully on the grill. I was thinking to try the method of Instapot to cook, then grill to finish up. I want a crisp outside but tender inside. I feel like someone has tried this here - @BunsenBurner ? Others? Is it worth the Instapot effort???

@abasket, I have not tried the marinated ones, just the regular ribs, but everyone seemed to love them. Followed @allyphoe’s recipe. About 6 pounds of ribs in my Amazon special Instapot for 30 min on high pressure (used “beans” button), then 15-20 min NPR, then cut into pieces and smeared with bbq sauce and grilled to perfection.

Ribs were a success! The Instapot cooking made them very tender and yep, falling off the bone. I always cut my Costco ribs in sections when I get them home and then bag them up for the freezer, so mine weren’t a solid rack. But Instapot, then maybe 10ish minutes on the grill to finish them up - everyone really like them! I’ll do it again (reminder to self: 30 minutes manual, NPR. )

Has anyone done wings in their Instant Pot yet? I love them out on the grill but they take so much time and babysitting. Wondered if I could cook them in the IP and just finish them on the grill. How much time? How much liquid? Spices in the IP?

I would imagine so. I think you always need liquid, right? Like a cup of liquid and then use the trivet so your meat isn’t sitting in the liquid? I used apple juice/apple cider for the liquid in my ribs.

A quick search of the FB site shows that people cooked wings for anywhere from 8-12 minutes and NPR and then finished either on grill or broiler.

Abasket, I just rinsed the ribs and shoved them into the VIP just like that - did not pat them dry, but no extra liquid. There was plenty of liquid in the pot when I opened it.

Just like ribs, wings can be done in the Instapot and then oven- or grill-finished for crispness.

Since mine had a dry rub on them, I did not want to rinse!

I made this delicious cabbage dish in the Instapot last night. I didn’t have much meat on hand and wasn’t really looking to make a dish with lots of meat - it was all about the cabbage and tomatoes for me! I did saute a little pork sausage I had, onion, a few baby carrots and banana pepper first - then added the tomatoes, seasonings and cabbage - only took FIVE MINUTES on manual and quick release to be perfectly done, perfectly fast. And it’s delicous! http://pressurecookerconvert.com/pressure-cooker-unstuffed-cabbage/

Now certainly you can do cabbage on the stove top and it doesn’t take too long. But to get the melding of flavors? You can’t do that in 5 minutes on the stove top!
