Instant Pot (Pressure Cooker) Tips & Recipes

Oh and we paired it with the half bottle of Rombauer zin that @BunsenBurner recommended (the one cent sale on cyber Monday). Thanks @BunsenBurner ! It was a nice zin! We are snowed in where I live. A rarity. So enjoying a nice evening.

Zero minutes is correct for the broccoli, not a typo. The IP goes up to pressure, then beeps that it’s done. I don’t recommend cooking broccoli that way, though. In my experience, broccoli varies in how much it needs to be cooked. Sometimes you’ll get tender broccoli that steams quickly; other times it’s tougher and needs more time. But there’s no typo in the recipe.

That’s not a typo, at least not if they mean to steam in the pressure cooker. It is possible to set the steam function time to -0- – what will happen is that it will come to pressure and then immediately lower the heat to “keep warm” – and that is appropriate for steaming quick-cooking veggies to avoid having them turnto mush. Basically, by the time it comes to pressure, the broccoli has been steaming long enough to be done.

Think in terms of regular steaming – if you were steaming broccoli on a steamer rack over boiling water on the stovetop, you might steam it 5 minutes - http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/steamed_broccoli/ – so if you keep it at pressure for any length of time, you’d end up with broccoli soup. So unless you want to make baby food, you’ll want to cook the veggies separately and add them after the meat has cooked-- or if using the pressure cooker, keep the time short.

I’ve had good results with greens like spinach or shredded cabbage by just stirring it in raw after the rest of the food has cooked but is still hot.

Thanks, everyone. I am still an instapot newbie.

My mom gave me a bunch of Roma tomatoes so along with cleaning the house and Christmas stuff I’m making some marinara from scratch! The garlic smells amazing!!

Need some help from my Instapot friends!!!

I would like to make this recipe for one of our family heavy appetizer spread on Christmas. It is not at my house and time is limited so I cannot do the broil portion of the recipe. Any suggestions on how I might take the chicken/sauce out after shredding and use the sautee button to “crisp” up the chicken at the end - and then add in some of the sauce???

Help!!!

Have you made the recipe before?

Hmmm… I doubt sauté function will be equivalent to broiling, but it is worth a shot! Frankly, it is delicious looking even without that extra crisping step.

Reading the recipe, I wouldn’t have thought chicken breasts were suitable for cooking for six hours and then broiling.

Haven’t made it before - I think the key will be not TOO much juice/sauce - maybe I’ll cut down on the liquids a little bit. I think as long as I have some “crunchy” toppings - like chopped red onion - it will be ok. We felt the current menu needed a chicken option and I wanted to use my Instapot so this is what my D picked!

Also thought that I COULD make it - as directed tomorrow and then just warm it up on Monday - it wouldn’t be crispy but perhaps a little less saucy? Decisions, decisions! Trying to make things easy on myself but there’s always a stumbling block!!!

I’ve lurked on this threat for a while and I had very good IP results with @Nrdsb4 's chicken and dumplings and @abasket 's burrito bowls. On Christmas Eve I made a carrot soup to go with a Honeybaked ham and it was great and super easy; I used Frank’s Hot Sauce instead of sriracha because I didn’t have it.

Reading the Instant Pot instructions. Today I will be making my first dinner with my new IP. Any suggestions for a newbie?

Beef stew @gearmom or chili. They take about 30 minutes…total. Delicious.

Thanks, @thumper1 IP has passed the steam test. I’m irritated that only 2/3 of the pot can be used. Didn’t know before buying.

All the pot is used. 2/3s are for the food, and 1/3 is for the steam.

@gearmom what size did you get. We went back and forth…and got the 7 quart one. For,the two of us…it’s actualy perfect. It’s even perfect for four…no leftovers though.

Friends have an quart but they are getting ready to buy the biggest one they can get…but they have three hearty eater sons.

I joined the Insta Pot cool kids. Got a 6 qt for Xmas. Too busy to figure it out now. Going to open it up the long New Year’s weekend

@thumper1 I got the $49 - 5 quart one. I ended up making meatballs and sauce because I had the ingredients on hand. Should have added water to the sauce (because it burnt a bit on the bottom) but it was good. The 6 quart was sold out. I could just make two batches if I need a lot. It’s big enough for pulled pork tomorrow. I have 3 1/4 quart cooking area. Seemed not worth it to return for a 6 quart for only 3/4 qt extra cooking area. HOWEVER if I had known I might have bought the 8 quart.

Just use barkeepers friend to clean that bottom…after you soak it.
