Instate chances for UVA/W&M/VA area

Well, I have been looking around here for a while, and I would like to be chanced.

Instate white male, im at a blue ribbion public school (if that means anything).

I am ranked between 90th and 100th out of 550 students with an unweighted 3.65

Excluding my language class, my UW gpa is a 3.75. That language class is Japanese, im in my 3rd (last offered) year of the class, and have to work much harder there than any other class, but I did not want to give it up (freshman year C, sophmore C+, this year I have worked to a B).

All honors classes, 1AP sophmore, 3AP this year, and im scheduled for 4 next year.

First take of the SAT's came in at a 2160, but I think I can bring that up to perhaps a 2250 or so (maybe even 2300, right? always room to dream).

SATII's have not been taken, but both should be in the 660-750 range.

As for EC's, I work about 20hours a week during the school year and 25 in the summer for the family business- my job is to manage the lot (small mechanic work, talking to customers, ect) and maintain all forms of adveretising online and hard copy. I am in NHS and mu alpha theta. I volunteer 2-3 hours a week at the local library. For the last 11 years I have spent every summer on the same swim team helping where I can with meet setup and pep rallies-ie, nothing I could really make note of. When the applications are being considered I will be a certified VA used car dealer (kinda strange, but it will let me help more over the summer).

Essays I can't tell yet, as they are not written, but I will put plenty of time into making them interesting and important.

So, what are my chances at UVA/William and Mary? Also, any other schools ideas that my stats are a fit for?

Is it right on that line where it hard to call?

Hey I'm from virginia and plan to apply to all of those schools too. I think you are definately a good candidate! Your rank/GPA/SAT/lots of AP's are what these schools are looking for. The foreign language isn't too big of a downfall but I do know UVA recommends taking five years of a foreign language but if that's all your school offers then it shouldn't be a problem. Keep the grade up all year and I'm not sure if there is an SAT II subject test for Japanese but definately take that and score high to make up for the C's. Your EC's aren't lacking but they aren't great either...use the uniqueness of the car dealership/mechanic to your advantage in the college essays--UVA really pays attention to essays. As for William and Mary SAT scores are the big thing, you pretty much have that covered especially since you're retaking it again! You need some safeties...I'd suggest James Madison, Virginia Tech, Christopher Newport, you'll have a sure spot at these schools. Well I hope I've helped!

Thanks for looking it over, and yes I do need some safeties...

So, are UVA and W&M both long shots, or should I put one more school on the application list to as a real reach (also, any suggestions for a reach?)

Just now,

UVA, W&M, George Washington on scholarship, James Madison, George Mason

as a William and Mary student, I would say that GPA and essays far outweigh SAT scores. I had a 1290 (old SAT, duh) but really strong ECs/essays/GPA.

Since I got in a couple of years ago, I know admissions have gotten tougher/stranger, but I think the old standard holds true -- that the school values long-term improvement or academic success over someone's performance on one or two tests.

good luck!

UVA and W&M aren't necessarily long shots, I'd say good matches but since they are strict on applicants you just never know! That's pretty much it for Virginia...if you want to stay sort of close maybe try your luck at Georgetown in D.C.(slight reach) or Duke in NC for a bigger reach, and maybe a few Ivies, I mean you really never know!! I have to stay in-state(college cost) but I would apply to Georgetown and Duke...
