Instate/Out of State Tuition

So i was checking the college admissions forum and read that if USC offers you a scholarship you can qualify for instate tuition. Is this true? How difficult is it to come by one of these scholarships? I know nothing about USC so was wondering if you could tell me about it. What school could you compare it to in North Carolina?

yes,its true! USC gives in state tuition rates to scholarship winners. You can read about the out of state scholarships, and compare yourself to the stats of the student body at these two pages:sc.edu/financialaid/academic
and honorscollege/visitors/studentbody.
The highest level of out of state scholarship, the McNair is fairly hard to come by.They pick 40 finalists out of the applicants (seperate app which you use for the Honors College too) and invite them to an interview weekend. For that scholarship they ask for things other than stright stats..ie leadership, community involvement.
Im not familiar with North Carolina schools since we're from NY (S is a McNair) but there were plenty of kids he met at the weekend and now in the Honors College who also applied to UNC-Chapel Hill. I guess the lure of the scholarship $$ drew them to USC.

The final decision for my daughter came down to Chapel Hill vs. Honors College plus scholarship at USC. I think the student body at Chapel Hill is very similar to those in the Honors College at USC. Overall, though I would say that USC compares more closely to NC State in campus style, location, and overall student body. That's just my humble opinion though and I'm sure many others would not agree. I would suggest you visit, talk to current students, etc. Every school is different and really there are no fair comparisons between schools. What is a fit for one person is not necessarily a fit for others.

We are from North Carolina and my son will be going to USC in the fall. He received the Cooper scholarship and is in the Capstone program. We toured several colleges in North Carolina but he loved the atmosphere at USC. I completely agree with northandsouth as far as NC college comparisons to South Carolina and advice.

With my stats can you give me an idea of whether or not I would qualify for a scholarship based on merit?

I think you have a good shot at being a capstone scholar and getting a small scholarship. Your SAT needs to be higher to get into the honors college and to compete for larger scholarships. You'd still get in-state tuition as a capstone scholar w/ a USC scholarship. Get your SAT above 1350(math + verbal =preferably above 1400) for to be competitve for honors college.

For this past year, DD got a McKissick Scholarship with a 1230 CR/Math SAT. However, she had very high GPA and class rank (similar to OP). And she was from a different part of the country as well. She did do the honors college application but didn't get that or Capstone (the very bottom SAT for Capstone that year was 1250). I would say...go for it. You can apply to USC early (rolling admissions). DD did this and knew she was admitted before Thanksgiving. She got her scholarship award in late February. Sadly (for me anyway) she chose to go elsewhere. USC was the second choice in the end :(

NorthandSouth....My d visited all three schools and we have to say USC is in a class of its own.....just can't be compared....academically or socially. We just loved the blurb from ESPN...hope you enjoy it too! Can you tell we are Gamecock fans?

"If South Carolina isn't the essence of Southern hospitality, I don't know what is. Those women sure know how to dress. Of course, in the South, a college football game is practically a formal event. Everyone (especially the ladies) gets all dolled up. But USC takes it to a whole new level. That football crowd is like something you would see in Vogue magazine"
