Instate, outstate question

So my parents were asking me if it was possible for me to get instate tuition for Maryland after my parents stay in Maryland for a year while I go to a university in North Carolina.

A more complicated question, but the answer almost always is – no. Typically, a state requires proof that a family is domiciled in a specific state – they own a home, work there, pay taxes, have registered to vote, have their car licensed there. A temporary relocation, without an intent to stay, rarely is enough to get instate tuition. That being said, it depends on the specific state’s requirements. You should be able to go the U MD website and read about their requirements for instate vs. out of state.

It requires one year residence. They want your address on your state ID to be in the state, this way they know you filed taxes in this state, it is a money thing. So I am thinking as long as you say you live with your parents, your parents have you on their tax file as dependent, and get your ID to say you live at your parents’ place in Maryland, your proof of residency should be cleared. However, this is my own speculation. I am in California, all we need as a proof of residency is California ID card or driver license, along with US passport. So it could be different in Maryland, or it could be the same, i believe as long as you get your addresses and tax file cleared up, you’d be fine.
