Insurance for Instruments

Did a quick search and didn’t find anything so I thought I’d ask. As my son is headed to college next week, I checked with my homeowner’s insurance to see if they cover musical instruments. They provide specified property insurance that would cover the instruments but payout in case of casualty is limited to $10,000.
The private lesson teacher my son uses recommended Clarion Associates. They work exclusively with musicians and orchestras.
Has anyone used them before? Do you have any other recommendations?

Thank you!

we have both of our kids very expensive flutes covered as individual items, they are listed on the insurance as their full value (similar to a piece of jewelry) and if there is an issue will be replaced at full value. DId you ask about that specifically?

We use Anderson Group musical instrument insurance for son’s cello. We’ve been happy with the coverage, but haven’t had to file a claim so no experience with that end.
Read the policies and make sure you understand what is and is not covered. Is it covered at just one address? Is it covered during travel? Is it covered if used for gigs? Is it covered if it’s loaned out? There’s lots of variation between policies.

We use Clarion (1-800-vivaldi) for son’s cello and bows. Both teachers and a couple professionals guided us there a few years ago when we bought the $$ cello. We have not filed a claim though so thankfully have no experience there.

Check your coverage carefully. If your kid uses their instrument for paid gigs, it might not be covered by your homeowners.

You want theft AND loss insurance.

Our kid used Clarion, but we also carried riders on our homeowners for all of the instruments (4 trumpets, an oboe, an English horn, and a piano) in the event the house burned down with everything inside. This was a huge amount of instrument cost/value.

You will need a current appraisal of your instruments for these insurances.

Actually…I think our kid still uses Clarion. He also insured a huge amount of his music as well. This had to be completely itemized, but if it was lost…would have cost a lot to replace.

Make sure it’s for replacement value.
