insurance settlement hurts aid?

I have money in a conservatorship for medical expenses due to an injury when I was younger. Now that I am of age the conservatorship had to be terminated by the court, however will still be considered conserved until I go to the bank with the court orders for them to release.

At the moment the only way to access the money is to use the court orders at the bank, however, I am afraid the money will then ruin all of my financial aid; in which case, all the medical money will be used up to pay for college and I'll be out that.

Does any one have an idea of what I should do? I was thinking maybe some sort of trust.. or giving it to a family friend... The money was designated specific for medical expenses.. and it is hardly enough to cover lifetime expenses due to the accident.

It seems that there is a special circumstances for exactly this situation:

Yes, you can ask your school for a professional judgement. Get together medical bills to show them what you are spending not covered by insurance.

If it is supposed to be used for medical bills, you definitely should request a special circumstances review. Be specific in detailing the reason for the account & provide any documentation you can come up with.

Alright, thanks. I will take this in to consideration… Does anyone here know off-hand if I am able to re-establish a conservatorship even though I am over 18 (and without declaring medical insanity) ?
