Insurance?

I am an international student, so I need student insurance.
But the Wellesley College insurance is expensive (about $1350 per year).
Is that average for US?

I don't need a lot of insurance as I have a health insurance in Canada
(it only covers emergency situations in US and also I need US-based company).

So can anyone recommend me good and cheap insurance companies?

Thanks

dain, there is a good reason our government is talking about insurance for all in the US - $1350 to cover a young person for her entire school year is *very cheap *by the US standards. I highly recommend using this plan - you will not find anything with the comparable coverage for less $$. Even if you are super healthy, you will be living in a new place in close contact with many people, your sleep patterns will change, your immune system will be adjusting to new environment, etc. Things like flu, colds and mono are pretty common to hit hard even the most healthy students.

I also believe that international students do not have the option of waiving this charge, and not all domestic plans will qualify the plan holder for a waiver either. The insurance company (Galagher-Koster (sp?)) has an online form that they use to determine whether a person requesting a waiver has enough coverage or not. I requested a waiver for my D last year, and the amount of information I had to enter into the waiver form was very substantial. For us it made sense to request a waiver since D was already covered by 2 very extensive plans through her parents’ employers.

Agree with the above post. The insurance rate you quote is CHEAP by US standards. The other good thing is that it is the school plan & they can help you if you have any problems with coverage or understanding exactly what the policy does & does not do. Getting a waiver from Wellesley because you have comparable or better insurance would be challenging, especially since it would cost more than the premium you are being charged. Being Canadian won’t help you if you need medical care in college in the US.
