Int;l Relations Major

How is the IR major at UVA? What paths do grads follow? Any acceptances into top grad schools or Foreign Service?

My hubby was an IR major (CLAS '86) and was offered a job with State during grad school and has been in the diplomatic corps since then…

Thanks. Where did he attend grad school?

GWU - and, just fyi, in the one group of about only 25 people in State that he works with there are three other UVA grads. You probably can’t go wrong either at UVA or WM, but count on grad school…

For the assistance of the O/P and others - “offered a job with State” and “in the diplomatic corps,” though probably not intentional, can be very misleading statements.

What one generally thinks of the “diplomatic corps” is: a foreign service officer (FSO).

State does NOT “offer” anyone a job as a FSO.

There is a very lengthy process to trying to become a FSO.

More info here: [Becoming a Foreign Service Officer careers.state.gov](http://careers.state.gov/officer/selection-process-printable)

And most, most assuredly - one does not need to go to UVA to become a FSO. Nor grad school. Nor be an Int’l Relations major.
