int. student chances- ED

hi! ok so im applying as an international student to williams(pakistani-female)...ED...and im really worried about my chances! i dont know how many can relate though, as Us citizens... i study under the british system (O levels- 9 A's out of 10, AS levels, 4 out of 4), am a prefect at my school (harry potter style), am on my school debate team which has come 3rd at nationals twice in a row, council member of the Human Rights Society and editor of my year book..... 2140 on SAT (690 on math, 710 CR, 740 writing) and a 750 on w history sat 2. im planning to give 2 more this oct... math 2c and lit. im also the treasurer of a student offshoot of the internatial rotary club which basically does a lot of volunteer work for underpriveliged kids and i have a very good though not AMAZING high school transcript.... and i know both my recommendations would be reallly good as well. what do you guys think? honest opinions!

heba, international admissions are difficult to predict because the numbers are so small. Williams attracts relatively fewer South Asian applicants than the big name schools so that's a plus. Your SATs are not exceptional, but they won't keep you out either. Assuming that your grades and rank are good, what will really make a difference for you are your ECs, recommendations and your essays.

Pakistan is a country that's on a lot of Americans' minds right now and you should use that link to your advantage. Also, if you are Muslim, be sure to focus on that aspect of your profile as Islam is an important discussion point on campus.

Even if you are not Muslim yourself your essay topic might feature some aspect of what it's like to be a modern woman in an Islamic country with a traditional culture. Williams uses international admissions to balance their diversity figures, so your essays can give you an opportunity feature what your cultural background could bring to the table in the community and the classroom.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

momrath, thanks! incidentally, I am a Muslim and incidentally my essay is going to revolve how I feel about the image of Muslims in the world today as a person who doesn't fit the stereotype. By Pakistani standards my ec's are very very good.... there aren't many after school oppurtunities etc around here... but yeah ive been told by many that the essay is always the make or break factor, including a fellow Pakistani who just graduated from Williams. thanks for the insight again...

2140 not exceptional for Williams? What's the average for W?

If by W, you meant writing, on the princeton review site they have this thing called the TPR projected range which is 700-770...and if you meant w as in williams the site only has the old SAT average, 1420. The average tends to be misleading though, ranges are more important. are you applying to williams too?

1400 would be just below the average (for CR and math). From the Williams website about the Class of 2010: "Sixty-five percent of those accepted averaged higher than 1400 on the SATs." I think the key thing to consider is that for the UNHOOKED applicant (not an athletic recruit, not URM, not some other hook), the average SAT is much much higher.
