a7, mind describing your project to me?

I've looked at the competition, and it sounds really cool to me. The idea of doing research sounds highly appealing to me, but I have no idea how to start. It seems like my lack of high level knowledge in science would hold me back, would it not?

Forum search feature!!

Since CC's forum searches produce unique URLs that expire after a while, I'll just use the "Copy Links" download utility from Firefox. Go to the threads that say "showthread.php".

But I'm really just looking to see if others have participated, how they got started, their projects, etc. (more of a general thing). I guess they're might be others like this, but I guess it's better to leave dead threads, well, dead.

I've still seen most of those by the way :)

Haha, by "original", I meant your post. Sorry, I should have said "original post."

But the thread I specifically pointed to has nearly the same exact responses that you're looking for. Have you looked at it entirely? (all x pages of it?)
Of course, it's understandable that you want new posts - since you have questions and don't want to private message everyone in that thread.

Yeah, I actually spent a good bit of an hour going through the topic when I find it in my search. :P Most of it is them being anxious about whether they're getting a letter or not. Then the thread just dies after the finalists have been chosen.

My project was about applying vibrational modeling to flapping wing dynamics. Basically the equations were already derived and setup and all I had to do was type them into MATLAB and run the program a million times and count the peaks on the resulting graphs.

Basically it was BS. I chose the wrong mentor.

The key to winning something is to write a good paper. Impress the judges. Get your parents, mentor, and anyone else in the field to edit it.

I see. I'll try contacting some university people.

I'm interested in Computer Science, Engineering, Biology, and Math.

But I think my knowledge is too limited in Biology and Math to currently start a project in it.

And I'm not sure how research would be done on a comp sci / engineering project.
