Intel Semi-Finalists

Hi,,

I was just wondering how much MIT respects the Intel competition. It's not as selective as RSI, but still, its 300 people from the nation. What is the acceptance rate for Intel Semifinalists at MIT??

gah...sigh. go read Matt's post.

I'm not so sure. This girl from my school with 1500+ SAT, legacy (father went to MIT) and intel semifinalist was rejected.

It would be helpful if you could actually tell me what he said or where I might find his post

It's not a hook--my friend was an intel semifinalist, deferred EA, rejected regular. I also heard of a finalist or two that was rejected.

coulld anyone, please, explain to me what's "EA"?
thanks
:)

But you have to ask yourself the same question about Intel as you have to ask about RSI: sure, it's not going to be a golden ticket into MIT, but is it going to give you a significant advantage over the average applicant?

Sure, some Intel semifinalists are rejected, but I'm willing to bet that significantly more than 14% of Intel semifinalist applicants are accepted.

Hriundeli: EA is early action. You apply earlier and either get a decision earlier or get deferred to be considered with the regular decision pool of applicants.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking.

Nobody said all semi-finalists get a golden ticket. I'm just wondering how much MIT respect the Intel competition. I mean it's still pretty prestigious being the top 300 in a national science competition. Isn't that what a prestigious technology school might look for?

this is not the same prestige-seeks-more-prestige system. I think it still comes down to the individual.

In my opinion, making intel semifinal, just like making S/W Semifinals, isn't that big of a deal. It's not like you made it into an international olympiad.

I think it shows that any research you did was at least somewhat legit.

If you make intel semi's, you probably have other characteristics and abilities MIT likes, thus you will more likely get in.
