I'm a junior currently looking into research projects for STS. Since the competition is in March(I'm not arrogant enough to assume I'll get that far, but you never know), its after the time when MIT would be considering ED/EA. Would it be better to apply regular since the statistics look the same and I would be farther along with the process or would it express my interest better to apply early. I'm pretty conflicted here. Thanks

I’m not sure what this is supposed to mean. I don’t see any disadvantage to applying EA in your case. If you do EA, are deferred, and get Intel, then your application will be stronger during the adcom’s second look.

If the competition is in March, it is after the time MIT makes admissions decisions for RD as well – the admissions officers generally convene to admit RD applicants in late February, and decisions typically go out in early- to mid-March.

Don’t worry too much about the strategic advantages of applying to MIT EA or RD. The standards are the same in both rounds – it’s more about what works for you and your schedule than about what’s advantageous.

I don’t understand what you’re asking - you’re a current junior, but you’re applying early?

Semifinalist and finalist announcements are made in January, early enough to inform MIT for RD. Winners are announced after the March event.

I believe the OP is applying next year and is starting to think now of the research projects he can pursue to do Intel as a senior.

Sorry for the confusion. I’m a junior now. It seems like it would be better to apply RD, just because I would hopefully have more awards/grades by that point. The only reason that I was considering EA was becuase MIT is by far my first choice.

Here’s my stats, my GPA is why I’m really worried about applying EA and possibly being rejected.

GPA: 3.65
17/795
SAT: 2360
Black male

EC’s(The ones that I’m considering listing for MIT)
TCU Research Apprentices Program(The program through which I’m doing my Intel)
Science Society
Mu Alpha Theta
Black Historical Society
Science Olympiad
Battle Bots

IB Diploma Candidate and will have taken 7 AP’s by application time.

Not the most competitive high school, except the top 50 people.

What’s the context of your GPA? Is it weighed or unweighed?

You’re in the top 2% of your class, which makes me not concerned about your GPA :)

unweighted
