Between UC Santa Cruz and UC Santa Barbara, where would I find a students who are more intellectually and politically engaged, who want to talk about ideas and readings outside of class, and who value education for its own sake?

I know UCSB is more competitive in terms of admissions, but I crave a serious intellectual environment. I asked a similar question on the SB board, and got nowhere.

people with better grades get into SB. People with better grades study harder and read more, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're smarter, they just work harder. so i guess SB has better Intellectual environment.

Emma, I'd be more than happy to have an intellectual conversation with you at SB :)

But seriously, this question is very subjective. You can find intelligent people at either school. I visited UCR and talked to plenty of down-to-earth, intelligent people (even some pre-med), but I also saw some lazy, apathetic personalities. This is just an example; it opened my eyes to what college is all about: it's huge and if you hang out with the right people you will have a great time and thoroughly enjoy your stay there.

How can 20,000 people from different parts of the state, country, and world all have the same outlook on life? The odds are on your side. Choose the school that appeals to you the most in terms of location, weather, academic opportunities (internships, volunteer work), professor interaction, and quality of life (happiness). Ignore the numbers, reputation, prestige, and, most importantly, other people's opinions. Because that is what they are: opinions. Advice comes from wisdom, opinions come from bitterness or pride.
