Intellectual Interests?

Hi, so I’m doing the supplement question for CAS, which is:

Describe two or three of your current intellectual interests and why they are exciting to you. Why will Cornell’s College of Arts and Sciences be the right environment in which to pursue your interests? (Please limit your response to 650 words.)

I’m a little bit confused. Are the 2-3 intellectual interests that I mentioned the same things as the interests mentioned in the second sentence? For example, I could talk about an intellectual interest in chess, but it seems kind of silly to say that I want to pursue chess in CAS or something. Can I write that chess and something else are my passions or whatever and connect skills that I learn from them with a major or something, which would be the interest that I would pursue in CAS? Thanks!

Make sure you answer the question.

One of the interests you could pursue is definitely chess. If you’re interested in history, talk about chess then strategy, tactics, thinking seven steps ahead, etc etc. It’s a fine line, but so long as you answer the question (and hopefully reference, not by number but by a few words from the course description, relevant coursework) you should be fine.

@DenReborn , the question has two parts - your interests and how those interests will be fulfilled at CAS. So, you do need to link the 2 parts and answer cohesively. e.g if Chess is indeed your interest by all means, list it and see if CAS has chess club that you can join. Also, as @Vctory suggested link those chess skills to other interests you have and can pursue in CAS. College wants to know your inclination and what you want to do with that inclination in CAS specifically.
