"intend to apply for need-based financial aid?" question on common app

I don't want to say "no" to this question. If financial aid determines that I have any need, then I would like to be considered for some assistance (through loans, jobs... whatever the institutions' means are).

However, I think we make a lot of money. I won't say how much for confidentiality reasons. Like, middle/upper middle class status. So, should I even check the box?

Thanks.

Just check ‘yes’ – all it means is that the admissions office will let the financial aid office know to create a file for you. You may not qualify for need based aid, but the colleges will make that determination once they have your FA application materials.

The answer is that if you want consideration for financial aid, answerin yes, will send your application directly to fin aid when the admissions decision is made and a package can be put together. Many schools operate on a first come, first get basis when it comes to doling out aid.

On the other hand, there are a few schools out there that are not need blind in admissions, and it is possible with those schools that by saynig you need aid, and you are on in the “maybe” category for admissions, it could affect your chances. However, these schools tend to be the pricier ones and oftne also have the policy that if you don’t apply for aid the first year, you have to demonstrate change in financial circumstances to get aid in future years.

Why don’t you run the numbers and see what kind of aid you are eligible to get. Terms like Middle class, middle income are not helpful. Basically, what do colleges expect a family with your assets, income, family members, kids in college, age of oldest parent, in terms of payment. If you are clearly way over that amount, or the school for which you are filling out all of this info does not tend to give much need based aid, it could be a moot point. Like the difference in the terms of the guaranteed student loans up to $5500 that your student can take the first year.

CHecking yes, generally means that the school will be looking for your aid applications such as FAFSA and other forms that the school requires. Just checking “yes” is just the first step in applying for aid.

Please does anyone know of any 2nd or 3rd tier college that offers full ride to international students with high ACT scores?
