I'm either applying to Dartmouth or Princeton for ED and I'm not sure what majors are there for an undergrate that plans on going to a business school. (Hoping to work in the finance field in the future).
Is D a good choice for me and what should I major in if I do apply?

Dartmouth is amazing for business, but only if you do well. Everyone at Dartmouth is going for a business career, trust me. Regardless if they are majoring in history or english. But since the ambition to pursue a business career is so flooded, you have to distinguish yourself amongst a pool of very distinguished people.

Not everyone, but a good many.

negativekarma: What are your assumptions of what prepares one well for a job in finance and eventual MBA?

I think your suppositions may need tweaking.

^this.

And to answer your question, econ or math would be applicable majors. But definitely true that to get an interview you need to do well- no matter what major. Visit both schools and choose by personal fit. Since both schools are target schools for wall street firms, you should have opportunities at either.

“Everyone at Dartmouth is going for a business career, trust me.”

This is the most disturbing thing I’ve ever heard about Dartmouth. Are you a student there or an alum?

The only Ivy my son is considering is Dartmouth, because - with his hippie, socialist politics, he wants to avoid the ******baggy, future-CEO culture.

When he visited Dartmouth, he got the sense that there were a lot of people there who loved learning for its own sake, and were not planning to be future capitalists. Was he mis-informed?

^^He was not misinformed. Many of D’s friends are in teaching – except the valedictorian who joined the Marines, of course.

That’s good to hear. Speaking as a former Army Sergeant who is also a liberal socialist who went into teaching - I don’t see them as mutually exclusive.

Ha ha – I only meant that Joel will have other responsibilities the next few years (speaking as a Marine brat).

Oh yes, yes he will. Let me see if I still speak Marine: Ooh-rah!

Dartmouth has a strong relationship with business in general, but absolutely not everyone there is going for a business career. Many went into politics, art, teaching, research, PhD programs, etc. I know this is only anecdotal, but a lot of other alums will tell you the same.
